WolfPack baseball sweeps doubleheader with Williston State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After their very uncharacteristic 15-5 loss Saturday, the Madison College baseball team rebounded with a doubleheader sweep of Williston State College (N.D.) Monday afternoon.

Game one was primarily a pitching duel, as Madison College collected the 3-1 victory, despite managing just five hits.

Williston would get on the board first, finding some offense in the bottom of the fifth inning. A Brendan Diaz single to center plated Hayden Benson, giving the Tetons the 1-0 lead.

Luckily, Madison College would find their offensive groove in the top of the sixth. Travis Hamilton helped the 'Pack tie things up with a single to center to score Sam Hurt. Two batters later, Luke Syens drove in the game-winning runs with a hard hit ground ball to center which brought in Danny Krause and Travis Hamilton.

Michael Pleimling would shut down Williston State from that point forward, picking up the win in relief. Pleimling allowed zero runs over one and one-third innings. Nathan Hoffmann would pick up the save, throwing one inning of shutout ball.

Game two, the WolfPack would carry their momentum forward. Using some early offense, Madison put the Tetons in a hole that they would not be able to climb out of, before eventually going on to win 5-3.

The 'Pack put three runs on the board in the second inning. Dan Schmidt opened the scoring for Madison College, touching home after a passed ball. Immediately afterward, David Luciani would single to center to plate Joe Stubbe. A fielder's choice would result in the team's third and final run of the inning.

Schmidt was back at it in the third, singling to center to bring in Brandon Gibis. The 'Pack's lone run of the inning resulted in a 4-0 lead for Madison College.

The score would remain at 4-0 WolfPack until the fifth inning. There, Schmidt would grab his second RBI of the day with a fielder's choice to third to score Keith Browning.

Still trailing 5-0 in the seventh and final inning, Williston State would fight back. The Tetons managed three runs in the game's final frame, but it would not be enough.

Marcellus Sneed grabbed the win for the WolfPack in game two. Sneed threw five innings, giving up just two hits, struck out six and allowed no runs.

With the win, Madison College improves to 3-2 overall on the season. The same two teams will play again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
