Box Score 2 The WolfPack split their season opening doubleheader in Phoenix, AZ, against the #8 nationally ranked, Gateway Community College Geckos.
In the first game, Madison College used a five run sixth inning to propel themselves an impressive 7-4 opening win. After trailing 1-0, the WolfPack used two triples, a single and an error to tally five runs on four hits.
Luke Syens tripled to right field to score two.
Courtney Watkins then scored Syens while teammate,
Travis Hamilton, scored Watkins on a standup triple.
Pete Hofman then reached on a error by the thirdbaseman, scoring Hamilton.
Gateway answered in the bottom half of the sixth inning with three runs on three hits, pulling within one run. The WolfPack answered with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh on a one out two-RBI single by
Dylan Detert.
Rex Morrow held on for the save in the bottom of the seventh and
Corey Fischer earned the win. Fischer pitched five and one half innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits while striking out three.
Keith Browning and
Luke Syens each had two hits while
Luke Syens and
Dylan Detert had two RBIs a piece.
In the second game, the host Geckos jumped all over the WolfPack from the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits to take an early 3-0 lead. Gateway would add to their lead with two runs in both the third and fourth innings. Gateway tacked on one more run in the fifth inning and shut down WolfPack bats. Madison College fell 8-0 in their first game of the young season.
First year infielder,
Brandon Gibis, was the only WolfPack player with two hits, going 2-for-3.
Joe Stubbe and
Carter Brekke accounted for the only other two WolfPack hits.
Dan Schmidt received the loss giving up 10 hits and four earned runs in just three and one third innings of work.
Nathan Hoffmann,
Ryne Blanton and
Peter Sommerfeld all recieved work in relief.
The 1-1 WolfPack play Glendale Community College in one nine-inning game tomorrow in Glendale, AZ at 3:00 PM.
