Box Score 2 Saturday, in their second straight doubleheader against Century College, the Madison College softball team scored a combined 34 runs. The result was another pair of victories, with the WolfPack blanking the Wood Ducks 18-0 and 16-0.
Game one, it was over almost as soon as it began, as Madison College scored 11 runs in the first frame. After taking a quick 3-0 lead, following a walk, wild pitch and error,
Austann Abbott would hit a three-run home run to put the 'Pack up six. A pair of doubles by
Julie Austin and
Kasey Gutzmer would score three of the remaining five runs in the inning.
From there on out it was smooth sailing for Madison College. The team tacked on five more in the second, along with a run scored in both the third and fourth, on their way to the 18-0 mercy.
Paige Weber got the win for the WolfPack in game one. Weber pitched five shutout innings, struck out nine, and gave up just three hits.
Game two, the Madison College bats would stay blistering hot. In their fourth and final meeting of the season against Century College, the team compiled a season-best 18 hits.
The runs were more evenly dispersed in the day's second meeting between the two teams. The 'Pack scored six runs over the first three innings, before exploding for 10 more between the fourth and fifth.
Paige Giese hit a two-run home run in the second, while
Megan Hanke collected three extra-base hits. Hanke doubled in the first, second and fourth innings.
Casey Beckwith blanked Century College over five strong innings. She allowed just two hits in the 16-0 victory.
Madison College (4-0, 0-0) softball is now off to its best start since returning to action in 2007. Next up, the team will make their Arizona spring trip, beginning Saturday, March 15 against Dakota County Technical College at 9 a.m.
