Box Score 2 The Madison College softball team is off to a strong start in 2014. Playing Century College to open their season, the WolfPack came away with two victories, winning 19-2 and 15-1 Friday.
Game one, the 'Pack used a 10-run second inning to set the tone against the Wood Ducks. With Madison College leading 2-1, sophomore
Megan Hanke had the game's biggest highlight, hitting a grand slam to center to put the WolfPack up 6-1.
The team would continue to swing the bats well, tacking on nine more runs over the next three innings to force the mercy. Four players finished the game with at least three RBI for Madison College, including Hanke (4),
Casey Beckwith (4),
Julie Austin (3) and
Michelle Francois (3).
Bridget Jost picked up the game one win for Madison College. She allowed just two runs over three innings of work, striking out seven, while walking no one in the 19-2 victory.
Game two, the scoring started even earlier for the WolfPack, with the team getting on the board in the opening frame. A fielder's choice and a
Brianna Wagner single opened the scoring for Madison College, giving the 'Pack a 2-0 lead after a half inning of play.
Five more runs would be scored by the WolfPack in the third.
Julie Austin scored
Paige Giese and
Brianna Wagner off a single to center, and then a pair of errors would cost Century College the final three runs of the inning.
Madison College closed out the game in the fifth, scoring an additional eight runs.
Kasey Gutzmer capped things off with a solo homer to center.
Paige Giese was credited with the win for the WolfPack in the 15-1 affair. Giese gave up just one hit, allowed zero earned runs, and struck out eight in four innings of work.
Madison College (2-0, 0-0) will take on the Wood Ducks in another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
