WolfPack women open conference play with win

Box Score The Madison College women's basketball team got the start they were looking for in North Central Community College Conference (N4C) play. Wednesday, the WolfPack took it to Triton College, winning 86-28.

"It's always good to start with a win, and to be in that winning column right away," said Madison College head coach Jessica Pelzel. "It kind of gives us a morale boost too, after losing two straight games."

Fueling the winning effort, the WolfPack forced 43 Trojans turnovers which led to 48 of their 86 total points. Madison College ended the game with 23 steals.

"Getting our hands up and pressuring the ball, it caused a lot of tips and a lot of travels," said sophomore post player Ellyn Hayden.

Offensively, the WolfPack were on point all night long, knocking down 50 percent of their field goal tries. Meagan Mazur led the way with 27 points on 12-of-16 shooting. Hayden added 12 points and eight boards, while Kelly Calhoun and Chelsey Schulenburg each tallied 11 points apiece.

Madison College, which took a 53-17 lead into the halftime break, never took their foot off the gas until late in the second half. In the game's final 20 minutes, they outscored Triton College 33-11.

The WolfPack (8-5, 1-0) will host Joliet Junior College Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m., and coach Pelzel knows her team will need to be more than prepared to face the Wolves. "They're always good, they're always competitive, they're always athletic."
