WolfPack women off to fast conference start

Box Score The Madison College women's basketball team is now 2-0 in North Central Community College Conference (N4C) play. That's thanks to a 68-65 overtime win at home against Joliet Junior College Saturday afternoon.

"It's something that we needed, not necessarily what we want to do," said WolfPack head coach Jessica Pelzel, about needing overtime to seal the deal against the Wolves. "They really played, and when we needed plays they stepped up and made them."

"It's really nice to start off 2-0, it boosts our confidence a little bit, and now we know we can do it in a tight game like that," said sophomore guard Chelsey Schulenburg. "It really brings the team together, so we can work together to get the win."

Meagan Mazur led Madison College offensively, scoring a game-high 19 points and adding seven boards. Schulenburg finished with 17 points, while Kelly Calhoun chipped in 11.

Defensively, the WolfPack made the most of the 36 Wolves' turnovers they forced, scoring 35 points off of the Joliet mistakes.

Despite being unable to finish the Wolves in regulation, after being outscored 42-35 in the second half, Madison College showed great resolve in the extra five minutes.

Leading by just one point late in overtime, Ellyn Hayden hit two big free throws to help hold off the Wolves.

"We beat them from the free throw line, basically," said Pelzel. "They make 15, we make 22, there's the game. We've been on the opposite end of that way too many times this season."

Madison College (9-5, 2-0) gets a break from conference play as they travel to UW-Marathon County Monday evening. The WolfPack's next conference contest is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 15 at seventh-ranked Milwaukee Area Technical College.
