Madison College's World Series Run Ends, Team Places Third

Box Score After an impressive run through the loser's bracket at the 2013 NJCAA Division II College World Series in Enid, OK, Madison College ran out of gas against tough LSU-Eunice team that the WolfPack had beat the night before. The team placed third in the nation and came up just short of playing for a national championship.

After losing their opener to North Iowa Area Community College on May 25 the WolfPack rattled off four straight wins including a convincing 8-2 defeat of the #1 nationally ranked LSU-Eunice Bengals. The WolfPack win and LSU-Eunice loss put three teams, including Murray State Community College (OK), with one loss in the tournament. With three teams remaining, a coin was flipped to determine who would receive the bye into the national title game. The other two teams would then play for the right to appear in the title game against Murray State. Murray State won the coin flip and received the bye, forcing the WolfPack to play LSU-Eunice for a second straight night.

In the 'Packs rematch with the Bengals, things didn't go nearly as well they did the previous night. LSU-Eunice jumped on starter Dan Schmidt by scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in both the second and third innings, and three more runs in the fourth off of Schmidt and reliever Mac Wichmann. Schmidt, who threw a complete game shutout in a 6-0 win over Brunswick CC (NC) earlier in the week, was saddled with his first loss of the season. He threw three and two thirds innings and allowed six runs (five earned) in his brief stint on the mound. Wichmann, Calen Rohrman, and Rex Morrow all spent time on the bump in relief of Schmidt in the 8-0 seven-inning run-rule loss.

WolfPack bats were silenced in the second go round against LSU-Eunice as the team mustered just six hits against Bengals starter, Brady Domangue. Domangue, who is attending LSU next season, was named an NJCAA All-American and finished the season with a 14-2 record, a 1.34 ERA, and 118 strikeouts in 114 innings. Of the six WolfPack hits, Ryan McShane and Dan Schmidt combined for four as they both finished 2-for-3. Bryce Barsness and David Luciani added the other two Madison College hits.

The Madison College baseball team finished as the third best team in NJCAA Division II baseball with record of 43-13. The team was 11-2 in postseason play and achieved several team and individuals records and accomplishments. The team's 40+ win season marked the fourth straight year the team finished with at least 40 wins and the WolfPack claimed their thrid consecutive N4C conference championship.

On the individual side, six players were named North Central Community College Conference (N4C) all-conference (including the N4C's MVP), three were named all-region (including the Region Tournament MVP), two made the NCAA Division II World Series all-tournament team, and Danny Krause was named an NJCAA All-American. Like the team, several players finished the season ranked highly in the annals of the Madison College baseball record books.
