WolfPack Struck Down in First Game of World Series

Box Score In the first game of the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Oklahoma, the Madison College Baseball team saw a national record set, one they did not want to see.  North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) righthander, Tim Black, set a Division II record for strikeouts with 16.

Black had a perfect game and a 2-0 lead going into the eighth inning when Nathan Pollock hit a one out single to centerfield. Dan Schmidt followed with a single of his own before Black walked Taylor Carlson to load the bases.  Greg Rhude then hit into a double play to end the inning and that was as close as the WolfPack came to threatening NIACC's two-run lead.  Black would then finish off the ninth inning by recording two strikeouts to surpass the prior Division II strikeout record by one.

While the WolfPack offense struggled, starting pitcher, Nathan Hoffmann and reliever Calen Rohrman pitched well.  Hoffmann did everything he could to keep the WolfPack in the game, pitching eight innings, giving up just five hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters.  Hoffmann then turned over the pitching to Calen Rohrman who had a one-two-three ninth inning, striking out all three batters he faced.  The game featured 27 strikeouts between the two teams and just seven hits.  The pitching dual resulted in a 2-0 win for North Iowa Area Community College.

With the loss, the WolfPack will play in an elimination game tomorrow against Brunswick Community College from North Carolina at 7:00 PM at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Tomorrow's game will once again be the last game of the day at the ballpark.
