WolfPack Baseball Wins Region, Advances to World Series

Box Score The Madison College baseball team did it again. After picking up wins on Friday and Saturday in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament, the WolfPack faced Kankakee Community College on Sunday for the right to advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series. In the championship game, Madison College beat Kankakee 3-1  after some late game heroics.

The 'Pack has a few days of rest before travelling to Enid, OK for the NJCAA Divison II World Series. Madison plays the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans in their first round game on Saturday, May 25 at 7:00 PM at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

The championship game started off slowly as both teams' offenses looked lethargic. The two teams combined to leave five runners on base through the first two innings. It looked as if both starting pitchers were rolling, including WolfPack starter Mac Wichmann, until Wichmann ran into some trouble in the third inning. Kankakee got on the board with a run on three hits in the third, but Wichmann was able to quell the threat with a strikeout to end the inning. Down 1-0 after three innings, Madison continued to struggle at the plate. The 'Pack mustered six hits through the first six innings before tying the game with a run on Rex Morrow's bunt single in the seventh to make it 1-1.  After a scoreless top of the eighth for the Cavaliers, the WolfPack bats finally came alive for two runs and the 3-1 advantage. Taylor Carlson provided the heroics with a two RBI single that plated Nathan Pollock and Dan Schmidt. Righthanded reliever, Cody Peterson, then sealed the win for the 'Pack with a 1-2-3 ninth inning with three groundouts and his second save of the NJCAA Region IV Tournament and his third of the postseason.

Nathan Pollock, Greg Rhude, and Joe Stubbe all had two hits to lead the 'Pack attack at the plate, but Taylor Carlson provided the big hit with his two run single in the eighth. Besides his two RBI single, Carlson scored once, Pollock doubled for Madison's lone extra base hit, and Rex Morrow, Dan SchmidtBryce Barsness, and Ryan McShane all singled in the 'Pack's 11 hit afternoon. Evan Richarz recorded the only steal for Madison College, his tenth of the year.

Mac Wichmann started the game for the WolfPack and threw five innings of solid baseball before being relieved by Calen Rohrman. Wichmann scattered seven hits and allowed only one earned run in his start, but wasn't given any run support. Rohrman tossed the next three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out striking out two. Rohrman earned the win to give him a 6-0 record, before Peterson entered the game and threw one great hitless inning for the save to preserve the win and a berth in the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK.
