WolfPack Baseball Wins Region IV Sectional Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Entering the day 1-1 in NJCAA Region IV Sectional Tournament play, the Madison College bats woke up behind solid pitching for the 5-1 and 10-1 wins over the Highland Community College Cougars. Needing two wins on Sunday over the Cougars, the Madison College team delivered like they always seem to do on their way to continuing their post-season run.

In Sunday's first game, the offense got things going with two runs in the first, one run in the third, and two more runs in the fifth behind starter Corey Fischer. Fischer pitched a gem of a game, scattering four hits over nine spectacular innings. His lone blemish of the day was the one earned run Highland scored in the bottom of the ninth as Fischer and the 'Pack coasted to the 5-1 win. In the nine-inning complete game win, Fischer struck out 10 and improved to 2-2 on the year.

The WolfPack offense looked much better in the opener of the second day of the tournament as the team recorded 10 hits, drew four walks, and were aided by three costly Highland errors. Danny Krause led the team with three hits, as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Ryan McShane and Nathan Pollock both recorded two hits in the game, and besides his two hits, Pollock scored twice and drove in one run. McShane also added one of the team's two doubles, and was joined by David Luciani. Luciani also led the team's balanced offensive attack with two RBI.

With the win, the WolfPack improved to 2-1 in the Region IV Sectional Tournament and forced another game with Highland Community College.

In the final and deciding game, the Madison College WolfPack displayed how truly good they can be with a 10-1 rout over the Cougars from Highland. The win propelled Madison College further in the NJCAA play-offs, more specifically into the Region IV Baseball tournament that starts on May 17 and runs through May 19.

After a scoreless top of the first for Highland, the Madison bats stayed hot to the tune of four hits, two walks, and two fielder's choices and in the process plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning for the quick-strike lead. Armed with a 4-0 lead, the WolfPack and starter Dan Schmidt ran into a minor hiccup in the top of the second as Highland scored one unearned run, but that was the only run the Cougars managed to the rest of the game. Always looking to put things out of reach for their opponents, Madison tacked on one run in fourth, another four spot in the sixth, and a solo insurance run in the eighth for the lopsided win.

Danny Krause once again led the team in hitting as he went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, and the team added 10 more hits for 14 in the game. Bryce Barsness (2-for-6) and Taylor Carlson (2-for-3) both added two hits each and six other members of the 'Pack each recorded one hit apiece. Starting pitcher Dan Schmidt got into the action with two RBI, and Carlson and Greg Rhude both joined him with two RBI. Nathan Pollock and Krause were the team leaders with two runs scored, and the duo accounted for the two WolfPack extra base hits. Krause recorded a triple and Pollock a double in the nine run win.

Starter Dan Schmidt did allow nine hits in seven and two thirds innings of work, but the lefty scattered almost all of the base hits as the Cougars left 11 runners on base. Schmidt also recorded eight strikeouts, and no walks as he improved to 5-0 on the year. Rex Morrow pitched one inning of relief and Calen Rohrman came into record the final out of the game and seal the lopsided with.

The Madison College baseball team was led by both dominating hitting (Danny Krause finished 8-for-10) and effective pitching (Corey Fischer allowed 1 earned run in 9 innings) throughout the two-day Region IV Sectional Tournament. For complete tournament stats please click here.
