WolfPack Come from Behind & Dominate in Sectional Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Madison College Baseball team had two completely different games on Saturday in the NJCAA Region IV Sectional Tournament but both ended in the same result, a win.  With the wins, the WolfPack will play on Sunday in the championship game.

In the first game, the WolfPack struggled to get going offensively and defensively as they found themselves down 6-0 in the top of the seventh inning.  In those first six innings, the WolfPack managed just two hits and starter Danny Sullivan gave up eight hits and five earned runs.  The WolfPack also had one error.

Everything changed in the seventh inning on a Trey Vavra looping single to center field that scored two WolfPack runs and finally got Madison College on the scoreboard. With renewed confidence, the WolfPack struck again in a big way in the next inning, scoring five runs on three hits.

A Ryan McShane single to center scored two and put the WolfPack within one run.  Luke Maldonado came up next and also singled up the middle to plate the tying run.  With two outs and two men on base, Landon Tenhagen singled to right field scoring the go ahead run.

WolfPack pitchers did their job as well over the final three innings as relievers Brent Mueller, Mac Wichmann, and Josh Jaro combined for three scoreless innings.  Mac Wichmann received his fourth win of the season pitching one inning, striking out two. Josh Jaro earned his second save of the season.

Former Madison East baseball player, Jake Page went 2-for-2 with an RBI and both Ryan McShane and Treysen Vavra each added two RBIs.  Despite being outhit 10-7 the WolfPack beat College of Lake County 7-6 in a come from behind victory.

The second game was a lot different story as the WolfPack jumped all over Highland Community College.  After scoring two WolfPack runs in both the first and second innings, Madison College bats exploded for nine hits generating 12 runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.  Eight different players recorded an RBI in the fourth inning including three players with multiple RBIs.

The game was called in the fifth inning due to the ten run rule and Paul Poirier earned the victory as he recorded a five inning shutout allowing just two hits.  Poirier's record improved to 5-2 and the WolfPack improved to 2-0 for the tournament.

Ryan McShane, Treysen Vavra, Landon Tenhagen, and Josh Rowles all posted two RBIs in the victory while Vavra went 3-for-4 and Tenhagen went 2-for-3.

Highland Community College was eliminated with the 14-0 loss and the WolfPack advance to play College of Lake County tomorrow (Sunday) at NOON for the right to advance to the NJCAA Region IV Tournament next weekend.
