Box Score 2 The Madison College softball team split their doubleheader at McHenry County College on Monday, April 9. The WolfPack took the fight to the Fighting Scots early, winning 12-11 in game one, prior to falling 14-6 in game two.
Game one, the 'Pack immediately put the pressure on McHenry County College. After
Brittany Kaltenberg scored on a Fighting Scots error, and
Courtney Ullmer singled to center to score
Amber Clifcorn, the team drew three straight walks to get Ullmer across home plate. Another walk to
Jodee Taylor later in the inning scored
Heather Edgren, and the team took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the first. Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots would answer with four runs of their own to tie things up. The WolfPack would break the tie in the third, getting three more runs on three hits and an error. After Edgren scored on an error by the McHenry County pitcher,
Brittany Kaltenberg singled to left to score
Jessica Spern, and
Madison Milsap hit a sac fly to center to bring in
Shelby Wollin. Madison College would take a 9-8 lead into the seventh, where they would seal the deal by adding three more runs. Two errors by the Fighting Scots, both on one play, would allow Clifcorn and Kaltenberg to score. Then, Edgren singled to center to help Ullmer home. Try though they could, McHenry couldn't come back from the four-run deficit. Despite a solo homerun, and two Madison College errors, the WolfPack would escape with the 12-11 victory. Madison finished the game with nine hits, and seven errors.
Amber Clifcorn (2-for-5) and
Courtney Ullmer (1-for-4) each finished with three RBI.
Jodee Taylor (1-for-3) added two.
Marissa Shaner (6-7) was credited with the win. Shaner threw seven innings, giving up ten hits, four earned runs, struck out four, and walked two.
Game two, Madison College wasn't as lucky. Defensively, the team once again finished with seven errors, and it proved to be too costly. The Fighting Scots scored in each and every inning on their way to a 14-6 mercy win. Madison College trailed just 4-3 entering the bottom of the third, after
Samantha Schuchardt and
Heather Edgren scored in the second, on a
Jessica Schieldt single and
Brittany Kaltenberg triple respectively. However, in the third McHenry had their biggest inning of the day offensively against the 'Pack . Three hits, and two errors, would lead to five runs for the Fighting Scots. Despite a three-run fourth for the WolfPack, Madison College could not rally back.
Samantha Schuchardt (4-6) was charged with the loss for the 'Pack. Schuchardt threw four and two-thirds innings, giving up fourteen hits, seven earned runs, striking out four, and walking two.
Brittany Kaltenberg (2-for-3) and
Jessica Schieldt (1-for-3) each finished with two RBI for the WolfPack.
Madison College (10-15, 4-6) is scheduled to host a doubleheader against Triton College on Saturday, April 14. The North Central Community College Conference (N4C) action will start at 12:00 PM.
