Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The last time the Madison College softball team took to the field for a conference doubleheader, against last year's national runner-up College of DuPage, things didn't go their way. The WolfPack lost a pair of 8-0 games. Tuesday, they put that behind them by picking up a doubleheader split with Rock Valley College, winning 4-3 before falling 9-1.
Game one, it was the Golden Eagles taking the early lead. In the third inning, Rock Valley scored a pair of runs on a passed ball and then a double to left to take a 2-0 advantage. The 'Pack would start to rally back in the fourth.
Marissa Shaner drew a walk to score
Madison Milsap, and just like that Madison College was within a run. Unfortunately, they'd give that run back in the fifth. However, down 3-1 entering the seventh inning, the WolfPack would respond in a big way. The team would collect three runs on three hits, and one error, to grab the 4-3 victory. It started with Shaner scoring on a passed ball. Next,
Jodee Taylor came home after an error by Golden Eagles pitcher Krista Bartelson. One batter later,
Lindsey Reno would drive in the game's winning run. A sacrifice is all the WolfPack would need to walk off with the win, as
Jessica Spern scored after Reno grounded out to Bartelson.
Marissa Shaner (8-10) picked up the win for the WolfPack. Shaner threw a complete game, giving up eight hits, two earned runs, struck out six, and walked one. Shaner and
Lindsey Reno accounted for Madison College's two RBI for the game.
Game two, things took a turn for the worse. The Golden Eagles soared out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and never looked back. The WolfPack's only run of the game would come in the third, with an
Amber Clifcorn single to left scoring
Lindsey Reno. Unfortunately, Rock Valley would score three more runs in both the fourth and fifth inning to escape with the 9-1 mercy win. Not helping their own cause in the game, Madison College would finish with five errors. Offensively, the WolfPack would finish with just two hits.
Marissa Shaner (8-11) took the loss for the 'Pack. Shaner threw all five innings, surrendering seven hits, just two earned runs, striking out one, and walking one.
With the doubleheader split Madison College improves to 13-22 overall on the season, 7-9 in conference play.
