Madison College Softball Gets Off to Rough Start in Minnesota

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Madison College softball team was eager to kick off their 2012 season, but the team hoped for a better opening weekend showing after returning from Rochester, MN with three losses. Madison was easily defeated 10-1, 10-1, and 12-1 against the likes of the Muscatine Community College Cardinals, the Kirkwood Community College Eagles, and the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Trojans in three games at the Bubble at UCR Regional Stadium on March 3.

The 'Pack started off the season with a game against the NJCAA Division I Muscatine Community College Cardinals, and the young Madison squad was nearly blanked as the Cardinals proved to much en route to a 10-1 victory. Freshman Samantha Schuchardt started the opener on the mound for the 'Pack, and Shelby Wollin provided the lone run with a solo homerun. Brittany Kaltenberg finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate and added a stolen base in the loss.

The competition didn't get much easier for Madison as they fell to the NJCAA Division II Eagles from Kirkwood by the score of 10-1. Marissa Shaner started on the bump for the 'Pack and Courtney Ullmer provided the only fireworks with her solo home run.

After two tough 10-1 losses, the WolfPack couldn't right the ship in the weekend finale as they fell 12-1 to another NJCAA Division II school in the NIACC Trojans. Tena Funmaker picked up the start for the 'Pack but was roughed up early on. Kaltenberg once again picked up one of two hits for the WolfPack and later scored a run. Kirsten Hahn added the other hit for the 0-3 Madison College softball team.

The Madison College WolfPack softball team and head coach Leo Kalinowski are hoping for big things when they head to Tucson, AZ for 10 games in the Tucson Invitational starting March 11. The WolfPack's first game in the tournament is a seven-inning affair against the NJCAA Division III Monroe Community College Tribunes at 9:00 AM Sunday morning. Though the tournament schedule is stacked with high-powered teams, the 'Pack remains confident and hopes to return from sunny Arizona with a few victories in hand.
