Box Score 2 The Madison College WolfPack softball team lost game one of Saturday's doubleheader 2-7 in Rockford, IL to the Rock Valley Golden Eagles, but rebounded for the 9-5 win in the nightcap for their first N4C conference win. The WolfPack managed only two runs on seven hits in the opener, but the offense came alive in the game two win by scoring nine runs on nine hits. With the split, Madison is now 6-10 overall and 1-2 in N4C conference play.
Freshman
Marissa Shaner got the nod in the opener and was spotted a two run lead after the first frame, but the Golden Eagles exploded for three runs in the second before tacking on two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Sloppy defense and four errors aided Rock Valley in the win as Shaner allowed two earned runs in six innings while striking out seven. Freshman
Brittany Kaltenberg accounted for three of the WolfPack hits as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases to give her 29 thefts on the year.
Amber Clifcorn and
Shelby Wollin both went 1-for-3 with one RBI in the 2-7 loss.
In game two, the 'Pack jumped on top from the start with three first inning runs and pushed the lead to 5-0 with two more in the top of the fourth. Rock Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the frame and added one more in the fifth to narrow the lead 5-3 in favor of Madison College. The top of the sixth inning proved pivotal for the WolfPack as they pushed across four runs to give them a comfortable lead. Rock Valley mounted a comeback off of WolfPack starter
Samantha Schuchardt in their final at-bats, but the freshman from DeForest was able to shut down the Golden Eagles after giving up two unearned runs to preserve the 9-5 WolfPack victory. Schuchardt finished the game with a great pitching line as she only allowed two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. She also struckout three to improve to two and four on the year.
Several WolfPack made a difference at the plate, led by freshman Lindsay Reno who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Fellow freshman
Brittany Kaltenberg finished with two more hits, two runs scored, and once again two more steals to give her 31 in 31 attempts. A third freshman,
Heather Edgren, added three RBI in the sixth inning to help seal the first conference win for the 'Pack.
Next up for the WolfPack softball team is a doubleheader against the Triton College Trojans in River Grove, IL on Tuesday, April 3. The first game of the conference twinbill starts at 3:00 PM.
