WolfPack Softball Team Drops Conference Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 They put up a great fight, leading Joliet Junior College through five innings on Friday afternoon, but giving up a seven-run sixth inning would cost the Madison College softball team a win in their North Central Community College Conference (N4C) opener. The WolfPack would eventually fall to the Wolves 8-6.

Madison College got off to a nice start in the first inning against Joliet. Following a Madison Milsap single, Courtney Ullmer would triple to center to help score the game's opening run. Though the Wolves would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, Madison College would get the bats going again in the third frame. Ullmer, this time with a single, would once again bring in Milsap, and then a Lindsey Reno sac fly to center would score Amber Clifcorn. The 'Pack would take the 3-1 lead all the way into the sixth inning.

Unfortunately, come the sixth inning, the Wolves would rally in a big way. Joliet, which managed just eight hits on the game, would score seven runs on six hits. The momentum swing would prove to be a bit too much for the WolfPack, though Madison College did string together a nice seventh inning. A Shelby Wollin single to right scored Amber Clifcorn, Courtney Ullmer, and Lindsey Reno, bringing the WolfPack back within two runs. However, with two outs at that point, Joliet would be able to hold off a Madison College comeback.

Madison College (5-9, 0-1) was supposed to play a doubleheader against the Wolves of Joliet Junior College. Instead, the two teams were only able to get in one game, with game two being postponed. The WolfPack will next visit Triton College for a doubleheader on Friday, March 30. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.

*Update: Game two of the Madison College softball team's doubleheader with Joliet Junior College was played as part of a tripleheader on Saturday, April 7. The WolfPack won by the final of 2-1. After the game went to the seventh inning tied at one, Madison College won off of an Amber Clifcorn single center field. Jessica Spern scored the game's winning run. Samantha Schuchardt got the win for the WolfPack. Schuchardt pitched seven innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, struck out three, and walked two.*
