Extra Effertz Pushes WolfPack Past Kankakee, Into World Series

WolfPack Celebrate Win
The Madison College baseball team is World Series bound for the second straight year. Joel Effertz led the way for the WolfPack striking out a career high eighteen batters in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament Championship. Madison knocked off Kankakee 6-3 to earn a national tournament berth.

Despite Effertz' work on the mound, the Cavaliers would take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth. However, the WolfPack would once again show their composure. Garrett Novinski singled on a bunt to score Jon Dybevik, and a Ryan Freitag single to left later in the inning would plate Novinski. Kankakee would tie the game at three in the top of the eighth, but the WolfPack would put the game away in the bottom half. Madison would score three runs, on three hits and two errors, to come away with the 6-3 victory. Treysen Vavra led the WolfPack offense with two RBIs.

Effertz picked up the complete game victory throwing all nine innings. The freshman from Ladysmith, WI only allowed nine hits and his eighteen strikeouts were a career-best.

Next up, Madison College (42-14) will head to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK. The WolfPack will be making their second consecutive trip to the big show. For more information on the tournament visit the World Series Information page.
