The WolfPack baseball squad got one step closer to their season goal by winning their first NJCAA Region IV Tournament game against the Kankakee Community College Cavaliers 9-1 on Thursday, May 19 in Crystal Lake, IL.
The WolfPack rode the arm of starter Parker Schrage's complete game, while the offense put up nine runs to support his cause in the convincing win. After Schrage set down the side in the opening frame, Madison jumped on top with a lead they would never relinquish. The 'Pack put up three runs in the bottom of the first with two runs coming on Tyler Brusky's two RBI single. Ryan Freitag and Tanner Vavra scored on the game-changing play. Freitag led off the frame by getting hit, and Tanner Vavra reached on a bunt single. With Madison up 2-0, Jon Dybevik provided the third run with bunt single that plated Andrew Wasmund who reached on a walk.
Schrage ran into trouble in the top of the second with runners on first and third, and no out; but a well timed 4-6-3 double play saved him from major damage. One run did cross the plate on the play, but Schrage thwarted the threat when he secured the third out the old fashioned way…via strike out.
After two scoreless frames for both teams, the WolfPack added their third run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth when Dybevik scored on Trevor Burmeister's RBI single.
Up 4-1, Schrage continued to roll by tossing four more scoreless frames before the 'Pack but up five big seventh inning runs to end the game with the 9-1 win.
The hero of the game was Schrage who tossed seven solid innings of seven hit ball in picking up the complete game victory. He only gave up the second inning run while striking out four as he improved to 5-2 on the year. The 40-14 Madison College WolfPack advance to face Elgin Community College in NJCAA Region IV Tournament action on Friday, May 20.
