Madison College beat both College of Lake County and Prairie State College in convincing fashion to set up a final game on Sunday for the right to advance to the NJCAA Region IV Tournament in McHenry, IL. The WolfPack beat College of Lake County in five innings, 11-1, and had an offensive explosion against Prairie State, beating them 30-5.
In the final game of the round robin, originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, and finally played today at 11:00 AM the WolfPack jumped all over the College of Lake County. Needing a win to get a rematch with Prairie State College, the WolfPack jumped out to a 10-0 lead after four innings. Each team scored a run in the fifth inning and the ten-run rule after five innings was enforced handing the WolfPack a 11-1 victory.
Ryan Freitag continued his hot hitting as he went 2-for-3 and posted four RBIs including a three-run homerun in the fourth inning. Teammates Tanner Vavre,
Landon Tenhagen and
Garrett Novinski each went 2-for-3 and thirdbaseman
Jon Dybevik was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. The WolfPack posted twelve hits total and did not commit an error. Second year righthander,
Parker Schrage, pitched a complete game, giving up just five hits and one earned run through five innings of work. With the win, the WolfPack earned a rematch with Prairie State College which beat them on Friday.
The WolfPack went into the championship game of the NJCAA Region IV Sectional Tournament knowing that they would need two wins against Prairie State College to advance to next week's NJCAA Region IV Tournament in McHenry, IL. The WolfPack wasted no time, in the rematch, letting Prairie State know they were not happy about being upset. Madison College scored four runs in the first inning and then six runs in the third to take a 10-0 lead heading into the fourth. The WolfPack then scored seven runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and eleven runs over the final two innings. Prairie State's only runs came in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the end, the WolfPack recorded twenty-five total hits and won by a lopsided margin of 30-5.
Kyle Coenen pitched seven innings striking out six and giving up seven hits. His only earned runs came in the seventh before turning if over to
Brent Mueller and
Cole Kroncke to close out the game. Treysen Vavre had a career day going 5-for-6 with two RBIs. His brother Tanner Vavre and teammate
Garrett Novinski each went 3-for-6 combining for four RBIs.
Ryan Freitag homered in his second straight game and the homerun went with two doubles as he was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Andrew Wasmund,
Tyler Brusky,
Trevor Burmeister, and
Jake Page all had two hits. Burmeister and Page recorded a game-high four RBIs each. While it was an impressive victory, the WolfPack still need one more win over Prairie State College to punch their ticket to the Region IV Tournament. Their opportunity will come tomorrow at NOON at Robin Roberts Baseball Field.
