After suffering their first loss of the young season in northern Arizona, the WolfPack returned south for a doubleheader against the #14th ranked Pima Community College Aztecs. The Aztecs played up to their NJCAA DI ranking in both games as they flashed their defensive skills and great pitching stifled the Madison College in two wins at the Kino Sports Complex. The Aztecs prevailed in game one 4-1, and 8-1 in the nightcap.
The Aztecs got on the board first with a run in the first inning and the WolfPack tied the game at one in fourth inning before the home team scored three in the bottom of the inning for the 4-1 win. Tanner Vavra led off the inning with a single to right field and Tyler Brusky advanced him to second with a beautiful sacrifice bunt. Vavra then stole third and Ryan Freitag grounded out to second base to drive in Vavra. Jake Peterson got the starting nod for Madison and struck out three in the loss.
The second game was almost identical to the first as the WolfPack finished with one run on two hits. The only difference was the Aztecs' four more runs and the four Madison College errors. Josh Jaro started the game the game and struck out four three and two third innings. Down 6-0, the WolfPack finally got on the board in the sixth inning when catcher Beau Goff led of the frame with a walk. Josh Rowles pinch ran for Goff, and immediately stole second. Garrett Novinski then stroked an RBI single to centerfield pushing across the speedy Rowles to make it 6-1. The Aztecs then tacked on two more runs and shutout Madison College for the big win.
Next up for the 2-3 WolfPack is the first game of the Jack Howell Classic in Tucson. Madison College and the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen faced of at field #3 of the Kino Baseball Complex at 1:30 PM.
