ENID, Okla. - The Madison College baseball season came to an end for its 26-man roster and 13 players dressed up in a WolfPack uniform for the last time at the NJCAA Division II Junior College World Series.

The WolfPack (44-15) became the fourth team to be eliminated from the tournament, which brought together the 10 best teams in the country to David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla. They lost to Paradise Valley Community College 4-2 in a must-win game for both teams.

"They hit the ball hard early and had one more big hit than we did," said Head Coach Mike Davenport. "They also made a couple of huge defensive plays that hurt us."

The WolfPack put the ball in pitcher Cody Griebling's right hand to start the game. It was his first start since May 9, where he pitched 6.2 innings and earned a no decision against Triton College, a Division I foe.

"I've been waiting three years for this," said Griebling before the game.

He responded by pitching 7.2 strong innings where he gave up just three earned runs. Griebling had 1-2-3 innings in the third and sixth. He also gave up just one hit during that four inning stretch.

The WolfPack offense, which averaged just over 11 runs per game in the regional tournament, only put up six combined runs in two games at the NJCAA Division II Junior College World Series.

The offense got off to a quick start against Paradise Valley Community College when #Brent Kakwitch# hit a solo home run over the 363 foot wall in left field. It was his 14th of the year and gave the WolfPack a 1-0 lead.

But after the Pumas scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, they held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.

A big turning point in the game was in the top of the fourth inning when the WolfPack were trailing 3-1 and #Justin Scanlon# started the inning off with a single. Kakwitch was coming up to bat after hitting a home run in his previous trip to the plate. Scanlon was consequently thrown out on at second base on a pitch out by the Pumas, which was a big momentum killer for the WolfPack.

"They either guessed right or had our signs down," said Davenport of the pitch out by the Pumas.

Each team only had one extra-base hit in the game, the WolfPack hit a home run and the Pumas had one double. The other 16 hits in the game were all singles. #Kyle Van Abel# contributed to the eight WolfPack hits and got on base in all four of his plate appearances. He was 3-for-3 with a walk.

The WolfPack made a final run at the Pumas in the top of the ninth inning and the entire team was on their feet in the dugout. But the comeback bid came up just short. They had runners on first and second base with one out, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the game and the season for the WolfPack.

It was the second appearance the WolfPack have made at the world series since moving up to Division II in 2000.

"It was a great group to work with," said Davenport of the team this season. "I thought from start to finish they gave their best effort. They really came together and grew into being a great team."
