WolfPack Let Early Lead Slip Away, Rebound to Win

The WolfPack (29-6) held a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning where they gave up five runs to give Waubonsee Community College their first lead of the game and ultimately the 8-5 win. They used a big second inning in the second game of the doubleheader to split the series 1-1 with a 9-3 win.

The WolfPack bats were hot early as they put up two runs in the top of the first inning. They added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning Brent Kakwitch and Kevin Wild each doubled to left field and batted in a run. Kyle Van Abel got his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Wolfpack gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and Waubonsee CC was able to cut the lead to 5-3. In the top of the sixth inning, Madison College went down one-two-three, lining out to center field once and grounding out twice.

Jack Larsen was pulled after hitting the first batter he faced and walking the second batter in the top of the sixth inning. He gave up four earned runs and six hits while striking out three batters in five innings.

With men on first and second, Justin Hunt entered the game. The first batter he faced bunted and while he advanced to first safely, the runner was out at third base. After that, the Chiefs reeled off a single, two doubles and another single to tally five runs in the inning and take an 8-5 lead that they held onto into the seventh inning.

Madison College scored four runs in the second inning and never trailed after that in their 9-3 win over the Chiefs. The inning was highlighted by Tanner Vavra two-run home run. Trevor Burmeister and Brent Kakwitch each also drove in a run in the inning.

Kyle Van Abel started off the third inning with a home run and collected his third RBI of the doubleheader. The WolfPack also tacked on two runs in the fifth and the seventh innings to extend their lead to 9-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning where Tyler Jones stepped in to close out the game, retiring all three batters that he faced.

After lasting just 1.1 innings in his start, Quintin Zander was relieved by Cody Griebling who got the win and improved to 3-0 on the season. Griebling came in and threw for 4.2 innings and didn't allow any runs. He gave up just two hits and struck out four batters in his relief appearance.

The WolfPack look to pick up their thirtieth win of the season when they host North Arkansas College at Robin Roberts Field on April 23 at 3:00 p.m.
