Madison College traveled to Illinois to take on one of their bigger rivals, Elgin Community College. The end result was two one-run games, with each team getting a win.
Elgin won the first game 8-7, snapping the WolfPack's 10-game winning streak. After two innings of play, 12 batters stepped up to the plate and 12 batters were retired. Both teams were apparently saving everything for the third inning. Madison College and Elgin each scored six runs in the inning.
The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double down the left field line by
Brent Kakwitch and a two-RBI double down the right field line by
Brett Sweger.
The WolfPack went down one-two-three in the top of the fourth inning while the Spartans kept their bats going by getting two more runs off of
Kevin Wild to take the lead for the first time in the game. After the first two WolfPack batters went down on strikes in the fifth inning,
Kakwitch advanced to second base on a spartan error in center field.
Sweger then stepped up to the plate and hit a triple to get his third RBI of the game.
Michael Huckabay entered the game in the fifth inning and threw two scoreless innings of relief for Madison College. Unfortunately the WolfPack were unable to score in the game's final two innings and they lost for the first time in nine days.
The second game took an extra inning of work for the WolfPack, but they came out on top 5-4 to avenge the game one loss.
Josh Jaro took the mound for Madison College and he settled in after a long first inning in which the Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.
It was the top of the fourth inning when the WolfPack offense came to life and scored four runs off of four hits and an error.
Kendall Frank,
Garrett Novinski and
Brent Kakwitch all batted in a run in the inning.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the WolfPack were holding onto a one-run lead and
Tyler Jones came into the game for
Jaro. He pitched six solid innings, giving up just one earned run while striking out six.
Jones got into some trouble early by giving up a triple to the first batter he faced. The next batter hit a single and scored the man from third to tie the game up at 4-4. The WolfPack got out of the jam, but now had to head into the eighth inning to get the win.
Tanner Vavra had just entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and led things off at the plate with a walk. He was then bunted over to second base by
Justin Scanlon. After a
Kakwitch single,
Vavra advanced to third as
Brett Sweger, who had three RBIs in the first game stepped into the batter's box.
Sweger had been 0-for-3 coming into his eighth inning plate appearance, but he changed that quickly with a single to left field that scored
Vavra to give the WolfPack the go-ahead run.
Jones was sharp in the eighth inning. He struck out the first batter he faced and got the next two batters to ground out to pick up the extra-inning win (5-0).
The WolfPack return home on April 20 to take on the University of Wisconsin - Club Team at 5:30 p.m. at Robin Roberts Field.
