MADISON, WISC. - Friday's Madison College Triangular resulted in a win and a loss for the host WolfPack. Madison College, ranked #16 in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, lost in a tightly contested four-set match 3-1 against the defending national champions and #6-ranked Heartland Community College. The WolfPack bounced back to sweep Southeastern Community College 3-0 in the finale inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium.
Match #1: #6 Heartland Community College 3, #16 Madison College 1 (19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-16)
The WolfPack held the early advantage with an impressive win in the opening set, despite trailing 6-2 early on. The deficit remained four at 14-10 when freshman
Braelee Kiepert terminated a kill to begin a 6-2 run that evened the score at 16-16. Still tied at 19-19, an attack error by the Hawks jumpstarted a 6-0 for the Pack to close out the set.
Set two was a battle of wills that saw the WolfPack lead 7-2 early, and maintain the advantage until a six-point swing for Heartland (12-4) gave the visitors a 17-14 advantage. Late in the set, Kiepert converted a kill to give Madison set point before HCC claimed the next two points for their first set point. Back-to-back kills by
Sam Schultz regained the lead as the Pack held their second set point; however, the Hawks rallied for three straight points to win in extra points.
The third set eventually resulted in a second consecutive two-point loss for the home team, who led by as much as four in the set. After a back-and-forth stretch, the WolfPack used a HCC attack error to own a 22-21 edge before the Hawks went on a 4-1 run to pick up the set win.
Heartland carried momentum into the fourth set and raced out to a 10-3 differential. The Pack closed to within six before a 5-0 run made it 17-7 and carried the Hawks to the match-clinching win.
Madison College registered a 54-42 advantage in kills over Heartland, who finished with a 9-5 edge in blocks. The WolfPack hit .145 for the match with eight aces and 74 digs.
Four players finished with double-doubles for Madison. Sophomore setter
Allie Andrews posted 42 assists and 13 digs, along with six kills, 1.5 blocks, and an ace.
Second years
Makayla Dallas and
Sam Schultz finished tied for the team lead in kills with 13. Dallas added 11 digs, while Schultz posted 13 digs.
Outside hitter
Ella Vosberg tallied 11 kills and a team-best 16 digs, while also hitting at a .212 clip.
Freshman libero
Jaydon Golsteyn had a dozen digs and sophomore
Caylee Coggins was tops at the service line with five aces.
Madison College trails 3-1 in the all-time series with Heartland Community College, who went on to sweep Southeastern Community College in the second match of the day.
Match #2: #16 Madison College 3, Southeastern Community College 0 (25-17, 25-18, 28-26)
The day's final match saw contributions from a wide variety of WolfPack players as Madison College finished with 33 kills, 12 aces, 4.0 blocks, and 58 digs in the sweep of the Blackhawks.(8-10).
Trailing 10-8 in the opening set, sophomore
Ella Vosberg earned side out with a kill and followed by back-to-back aces as she ignited a greater 6-1 run to give Madison a 14-11 lead. Still up three later in the set, Vosberg strung together two more kills to close a 5-0 stretch as the WolfPack began to pull away at 23-15. Another Vosberg ace sealed the set win.
Tied 7-7 in the second set, freshman
Danica Pauls recorded a kill to started a 4-0 run for the home team; however, the Blackhawks answered with a four-point run of their own later to tie the set at 15-15. Madison College closed out the set winning ten of 13 points, with an ace from freshman
Colby LaPlant finishing the win.
The third set would require extra points to determine a winner. Before than, Madison engineered a pair of 5-0 surges to lead 13-11 and then 22-18. Southeastern responded with a 6-1 burst to make it set point, but LaPlant tied it at 24-24 with a kill. A SCC service error stymied another set point for the visitors, and after the Pack failed to close out their first set point at 26-25, freshman
Amara Jahner served up yet another set-winning ace to seal the match.
Seven different players finished with at least one kill for Madison College, led by eight from Vosberg and six each by
Makayla Dallas and LaPlant, who set a new career-high. LaPlant also hit a team-high .357. The duo of Vosberg and LaPlant also finished tied for team-high honors with three aces.
Allie Andrews secured another double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs, to go along with three kills and
Libero
Sam Schultz tracked down a team-leading 17 digs.
Madison College is 2-0 all-time against Southeastern Community College.
