South Suburban uses big innings to snap #8 WolfPack win streak

Salvesen becomes ninth player in program history with five or more hits in a game

SOUTH HOLLAND, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team had not suffered a loss in the month of April, a ten-game streak that ended Saturday with an 8-5 setback at South Suburban College in a Region 4 class. Freshman Ian Salvesen was a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate as he became the ninth player in program history to produce five or more hits in a single game. The decision narrows the all-time series to 27-24 in favor of the WolfPack.

Neither team was able to generate much offense in the early going; however, Madison College broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Salvesen and Nate Novinska both singled to open the inning, and Sam Moses drew a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, freshman Eason Hurd hit a hard ground ball through the left side to score both Salvesen and Novinska.

South Suburban College (27-14) leapfrogged the Pack in the fifth with five runs on five hits and a walk. A two-run single tied the score, and a run-scoring base hit put the Bulldogs in front. A two-run homer to right made it a three-run differential.

The WolfPack got one run back in the seventh as Braylen White and Salvesen each singled, and White was able to race in on an eventual double-play ball to the right side by Novinska.

The home half of the seventh saw SSC post three more runs on four hits and a wild pitch to take an 8-3.

Facing their last at bats, Madison College loaded the bases with one out, and Novinska came through with a run-scoring base knock to left to plate Chase Maika. Quinn Falish delivered two batters later with a two-out grounder to left to bring in White and close the gap to three runs. With two runners in scoring position and the tying run at the plate, Hurd grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Salvesen, a native of Hatley, Wisconsin, extended his hitting streak six games with his five hits, as he now leads the team with 39 hits on the season. The hits yielded one run.

White, hitting ahead of Salvesen, had two hits and a walk, resulting in two runs scored. Novinska, hitting behind Salvesen, was 2 for 5 with a run scored and one batted in. Falish and Hurd each had a hit and a RBI, while Maika tallied a hit and scored one run.

Sophomore Jackson Broden (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. The Janesville, Wisconsin, native, struck out eight batters, marking his third outing with eight or more K's. Carter Lund pitched two-plus innings and struck out two batters, while surrendering three runs on four hits. Aaron Ploszay worked a perfect inning in relief with one strikeout.
