Big fifth inning sends #10 WolfPack over #4 South Mountain

Jackson strikes out nine as Madison College wins series rubbermatch

PHOENIX, ARIZ. - A day after splitting a doubleheader with #4 South Mountain, the #10 Madison College baseball team earned a 6-1 victory in a rubbermatch on Wednesday between two teams ranked nationally in the top ten. Sophomore pitcher Broden Jackson recorded nine strikeouts as the Pack racked up 15 K's. The win gives Madison College a series wins, while the Cougars still boast a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.

Madison College posted the game's first run in the top of the first inning. Freshman Braylen White led off the game with a single, giving him a hit in seven of the nine games he's played so far. Three batters later, and with two outs, sophomore Sam Moses grounded a single to left to drive in White for a 1-0 lead.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the third when second year infielder JJ Wolbert doubled to open the inning and Moses again delivered with a sacrifice fly.

The WolfPack busted the game open with a four-run fifth inning. A walk, a hit by pitch, and an error loaded the bases for Nate Novinska, who roped a double to right field to score Easton Engel and White to make it 4-2. Beau Bloxdorf registered a run-scoring single to plate Wolbert, and Salvesen capped the inning with a ground out to first that brought home Novinska for a 6-0 advantage.

South Mountain scraped across a late run in the bottom of the ninth to avoid the shutout. Jackson (2-0), a righthander from Janesville, Wisconsin, recorded nine strikeouts over five scoreless innings to record his second win. He walked four and allowed one hit. Sophomores Axel Donaldson and Chase Baker each worked two innings of relief, giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Baker allowed an earned run.

Seven different players recorded a hit for the WolfPack. Novinska finished with two runs batted in and one run scored, while Moses had two RBI. White and Wolbert each scored two times
