JANESVILLE, WISC. - In just her third year at the helm, Madison College women's basketball head coach
Angel Whetstone has pushed her program to heights not seen in nearly a decade. Saturday's 75-66 defeat of in-state and Region 4 for Blackhawk Technical College gave the WolfPack their first 20-win season since the 2017-18 season, and the 24th such season in program history. Freshman
Jamera Green led the way with 20 points as the Pack completed a regular season sweep of the Talons as the two programs begin a new rivalry in south central Wisconsin.
Blackhawk Technical College (4-18) sent an early message with five straight points to start the game; however, Madison College responded and eventually tied the game at 15-15 late in the first quarter. Green, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, made her first three of the day on the final possession to sent the WolfPack to the second quarter with an 18-17 advantage. That triple ignited an 11-0 run that include back-to-back three's from
Keelyn Zwirschitz and Green to start the next ten minutes and build a 26-17 lead. A personal 5-0 burst by Green midway through the quarter extended the lead to a dozen at 35-23, and a long-range hit by fellow first year
Chloey Bynum gave the WolfPack their largest lead of the game at 41-26 before the Talons closed the gap to 11 at halftime.
The second half opened with a 9-2 surge for BTC to make it a four-point game, and the differential eventually got as thin as two when a pair of free throws made it 47-45 with less than three minutes to play in the quarter. Madison answered with another Bynum three-pointer and eventually owned a 56-47 lead to begin the fourth quarter. That advantage peaked at 14 in the fourth after another Green triple and again after a
Dani Latz layup before the Talons put together one final push on their home floor. An 11-3 run narrowed the score to 68-82 with 2:40 remaining, but first year guard
Serinity Metcalfe secured the win by draining seven of eight free throws in the final minute.
Green made four 3-pointers for the second time this season against the Talons and paced the Pack with 20 points. She finished 8 of 17 overall and 4 for 10 beyond the arc en route to her second game of 20 or more points. Green also added four steals and two rebounds.
Metcalfe posted 16 points, six rebounds, six assists, and six steals to lead Madison in assists and steals. She scored 9 of her 16 from the free throw line and made one of her three field goals from three-point range.
Freshman forward
Maddi DeSmet secured her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She was 4 for 13 overall and 5 of 7 at the free throw line.
Zwirschitz rounded out the double-digit scoring with ten points, including a pair of three's, and seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists.
Madison College finished 25 for 78 (32%) overall, 9 for 34 (26%) from distance, and 16 of 25 (64%) at the stripe. They collected 17 steals and forced 24 turnovers, while only committing nine, and amassed a 20-14 edge in points off turnovers. The WolfPack also held a 21-10 lead in fast break points.
