HAMMOND, IND. - The Madison College men's soccer team appears to be picking up some momentum, especially offensively, as it heads into the month of October. The #10-ranked WolfPack defeated South Suburban College 6-2 on Saturday to remain unbeaten against Region 4 opponents, and have now scored six or more goals in three straight matches. Despite their first victory over SSC since 2007, the Pack still trails the Bulldogs in the all-time series by a narrow 5-4-2 margin.
Madison College jumped out in front early with a 5' goal from freshman
Bryan Hernandez as he converted a
Gui Amaral pass for the third goal this season and second in as many games for the DeForest, Wisconsin, native. The advantage was extended to 2-0 in the 13' as
Gio Diaz set up his fellow sophomore
Josh Kiltz, and the native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. For Kiltz, it was also his third goal this fall, while Diaz now boasts a team-leading five assists on the season.
South Suburban College (0-9-2) answered immediately with a goal of their own in the 13' to narrow the gap right back to a single goal; however, freshman
Kian Downey struck in the 26' with a successful penalty kick to make it 3-1 at halftime.
The WolfPack began to pull away in the second half, using a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes of the second session to build a 5-1 advantage.
Gio Diaz got it going with a 54' goal on an assist from freshman
Caden Pullar-Newman as Diaz, a former Badger HS athlete, also sits atop the team's goal scoring list with six. Four minutes later, freshman
Angel Gomez Lopez found the back of the net, sending home a pass from
Dylan Sutton to make it a four-goal lead. It also pulled Gomez Lopez into a tie with Sutton for second on the team in goals scored with four.
The Bulldogs added an unassisted goal in the 76' before
Bryan Diaz completed the scoring with a goal in the 78' for his first collegiate scoring strike. Fellow first year
Chuck Frank was awarded an assist on the play.
Madison College finished with an 18-2 lead in total shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Kiltz led the way with four total shots, while he and Downey each had two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Caylen Coventry picked up the win despite allowing two goals and not recording a save. Through ten matches, the WolfPack have outscored the opposition 34-6.
