HAMMOND, IND. - The beginning of October presents a challenging stretch for the Madison College women's soccer team, who will play a pair of ranked teams and perennial Region 4 powers in back-to-back road games with South Suburban College and Rock Valley College. That sequence began Saturday with a 2-0 setback against the #17-ranked Bulldogs. The WolfPack trail South Suburban by a 5-1-1 count in the all-time series, with SCC winning five straight meetings.
South Suburban College (8-1-0) was on the attack early, posting three shots and putting one on goal in the opening ten minutes. Sophomore
Amalia Molgard registered the first WolfPack shot on goal in the 11', but was denied by the SCC goalkeeper. The score remained locked at 0-0 through 33 minutes until the Bulldogs put one past freshman goalkeeper
Arabella Penfold on a header. Penfold gave up with a save on a previous shot on goal; however, her punt was intercepted by SCC and eventually played back into the penalty area with a long, high pass. It took one large bounce and allowed a Bulldogs player to attempt the header before Penfold was able to get there, resulting in a goal as the two players collided. The goal snapped an impressively scoreless minutes streak by WolfPack goalkeepers at 455 minutes and dating back five games to a 9-1 win over Oakton College on September 5.
The Bulldogs added some breathing room early in the second half with a 56' goal. South Suburban worked their offense on the right side of the pitch, resulting in a shot attempt that a Madison College defender attempted to redirect with her knee. It sent the ball higher into the air, landing at the feet of the same Bulldogs player that scored in the first half. She was able to get off enough of a scoring strike to beat Penfold for the two-goal differential.Â
The WolfPack generated four more shots after that, including two on goal by sophomore
Hayleigh Motelet and freshman
Chloe Adalin in the final ten minutes. Both were turned away by the opposing goalkeeper. Madison College was also unable to take advantage of a 66' red card on SSC, leaving the hosts a player down.
South Suburban finished with a 15-7 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 lead in shots on goal. Penfold, a native of Southerlandshire, Australia, was credited with eight saves, tying her career-high for a single match. Sophomore
Alexandra Leal joined the list of Molgard, Motelet, and Adalin with a shot on goal for the Pack.
