MADISON, WISC. - A pair of second half goals sent the Madison College women's soccer team to a thrilling 3-1 win over Region 4 and in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on Wednesday at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Three different players scored for the WolfPack with forward
Emlyn Knutson netting the game-winner just five minutes after the Stormers equalized. The Pack is 8-0-1 in the all-time series. Prior to kickoff,
Kylie Hellenbrand,
Emlyn Knutson,
Alexandra Leal,
Zoey Lovejoy,
Maddie Marquette,
Amalia Molgard,
Hayleigh Motelet,
Emmy Coe Troup, and
Brenna Uttech were celebrated for Sophomore Night.
Despite an advantage in time of possession and shots on goal in the first half, the match was scoreless into the 36' when Madison College tallied the first goal. As the WolfPack worked the ball around the offensive end, Uttech dumped a little pass to freshman
Bayley Winrich. The midfielder unleashed a kick from 30 yards out that sailed over the Stormers goalkeeper and tucked under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. The scoring strike is the first career goal for the Tomah, Wisconsin, native, and first collegiate assist for Uttech.
Still a one-goal differential as the match moved into the second half, Milwaukee Area Technical College (3-8-1) pulled even in the 47' as they put a ball past freshman goalkeeper
Makenzie Roman. Off a corner kick, the ball was sent high and towards the penalty kick dot, where it was headed towards the net. Roman made a leaping attempt at the save; however, she was only able to punch it off the left post and into the net.
Just five minutes later, the WolfPack responded with the game-winning goal. As the teams battled for possession along the far boundary in the 53', freshman
Maddie Ludwig delivered a long pass to the heart of the penalty box and Knutson was there for a successful header to give the home team a 2-1 lead. The former Sun Prairie East HS athlete had five goals on the year, with Ludwig, a native of Washburn, Wisconsin, becoming the fifth player in program history to reach double-digit assists in a single season.
The teams continued to battle over the final 37 minutes; however, Madison College earned some needed breathing room in the 85' on a goal from freshman
Roos Zwolschen. The sequence again started with another cross from Ludwig that was kicked and headed by two Stormers players in the penalty area. Zwolschen, a midfielder/forward from the Netherlands, came up with the loose ball and chipped a long shot from above the penalty arc and into the net, much like the initial goal by Winrich. The goal is Zwolschen's ninth and gives her a three-match scoring streak.
Madison College finished with an 18-4 lead in total shots and a 12-2 differential in shots on goal. Knutson led the five shots total, while Uttech and Motelet each put to shots on goal. Roman, a native of Monona, Wisconsin, was credited with one save and one goal allowed in the win.
