Madison College rebounds with 6-0 shutout of Bryant & Stratton

Knutson, Marquette score multiple goals in Region 4 victory

MADISON, WISC. - In need of a win following a pair of close losses to top Region 4 teams, the Madison College women's soccer team got just that with a 6-0 shutout over Bryant & Stratton College on Saturday at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Freshman Emlyn Knutson scored a hat trick, while sophomore Maddie Marquette notched two goals to power the offense. The win gives WolfPack a 5-4 lead in the head-to-head series with the in-state rival Bobcats.

The first goal of the game came as an own goal by Bryant & Stratton College (0-11-3) when Knutson launched a pass near the top of the goalie box, where sophomore Amalia Molgard whiffed on a header and it ricocheted off a BSC players head and into the net in the 13'.

It remained 1-0 until Knutson started a string of three straight goals with a scoring strike in the 41'. A foul on the Bobcats gave the WolfPack a free kick from the half circle above the penalty area. Freshman Chloe Adalin took the kick and bounced it off the crossbar, allowing Knutson an opportunity to race in and punch the ball across with her knee.

Up 2-0 entering the second half, Knutson added to her and the team's goal total in the 50' with an unassisted goal. After her initial shot on goal was denied by the BSC goalkeeper and resulted in a corner kick, the 'keeper again punched it out of the corner and Knutson ran it down to reset the offense. She eventually dribbled through a host of defenders before booting a low shot that snuck between the left post and the diving GK.

Three minutes later, Knutson registered her second career hat trick. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, took a pass on the right side of the pitch from freshman Maddie Ludwig, played the ball through her own legs, and dribbled to her left, where she unleashed another shot on goal. It was initially stopped by the goalkeeper; however, when the ball hit the turf, it spun back into the goal to make it 4-0. She now boasts four goals on the season.

Marquette had just one goal on the season prior to Saturday and was able to notch two scoring strikes over the final 12 minutes. Her first goal came in the 79' off a corner kick by first year midfielder/goalkeeper Makenzie Roman. Marquette charged inside the goalie box and redirected the ball towards the net, where it again ricocheted off the goalkeeper and in. It became her first career multi-goal performance when she converted again in the 87' when the Bobcats failed to clear the ball and sophomore Kylie Hellenbrand tapped a pass in the direction of Marquette. The defender/midfielder from Janesville, Wisconsin, launched a high shot from almost 30 yards out that, once again, popped off the GK's hand and landed in the goal.

Madison College finished with a 32-0 lead in total shots and a 22-0 differential in shots on goal. Knutson led the way with 13 shot attempts and nine shots on goal, resulting in three goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Markiya Uherka earned the clean sheet, while her counterpart, Paige Kurtz, recorded 14 saves.
