MADISON, WISC. - In a rematch of last year's Region 4 championship, Madison College sent a message to the rest of the region with a dominating three-set sweep of Harper College inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Wednesday. The #14-ranked WolfPack cruised through the first two sets and then rallied late in a competitive third set to win in extra points. The victory on evens the all-time series at 21-21.
Madison College wasted no time flexing some early muscle as sophomores
Ella Vosberg and
Makayla Dallas terminated kills as a fast 3-0 start eventually turned into a 9-4 advantage after Dallas added another kill and an ace. Freshman
Amara Jahner registered an ace as part of a five-point service run that opened up the differential to 20-10. Harper College (14-7) fought off three consecutive set points before the Pack claimed it with a Hawks service error.
The second set opened with another Vosberg smash followed by three consecutive aces from freshman
Gretchen Kammerer. Following a kill by the Hawks, Jahner strung together another five-point run at the service line with one ace as the WolfPack assumed a 9-1 lead. The advantage swelled to 15-4 after sophomore
Caylee Coggins exchanged kills with aces from freshman
Danica Pauls in a 4-0 surge that forced a Harper College timeout. Coggins later added two aces of her own before Madison College finished off the set with kills by
Braelee Kiepert, Vosberg,
Colby LaPlant, and two by Pauls.
Playing with their lineup and rotation a bit in the third set, Madison College fell behind 8-4 before engineering a four-point run with a Coggins ace and Kiepert kill to take an 11-10 lead. With the set tied at 18-18, three consecutive errors by the Hawks handed the home team a 21-18 edge; however, Harper College continued to fight and won the next five points to make it 23-21. After a Madison College timeout, Kiepert and Pauls recorded kills and an illegal set by the Hawks made it match point at 24-23. Harper then claimed two straight points to reach their first set point of the match, and after another Pauls kill, the Hawks regained set point at 26-25. From that point on, it was all WolfPack with a Vosberg kill to pull even and a Harper error to regain match point. Jahner's third ace of the match proved to be the final point in the sweep.
