MADISON, WISC. - First year forward
Maddi DeSmet set the tone early Thursday night and helped lead the Madison College women's basketball team to an 89-48 victory over the College of DuPage in a Region 4 contest inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. DeSmet score all of her career-high points in the first half and was one of two players to surpass 20 points for the WolfPack, who have won season-best seven straight games and still receiving votes in the NJCAA Division II Poll. The win also improved the Pack's lead in the all-time series against the Chaparrals by a 30-19 margin.
DeSmet owned the game's first ten minutes, converting 7 of 8 shots for 14 points as the WolfPack stormed out to a 25-5 lead. Madison College scored the game's first ten points, and held the College of DuPage (5-14) without a field goal for the first 6:30 of the game. After the Chaps narrowed the differential to 17 three minutes into the second quarter, the Pack outscored COD by a 22-12 margin to lead 51-22 at the half.
The WolfPack cruised to victory in the second half as they slowly added to their lead, which peaked at 43 late in fourth quarter. Freshman guard Serenity Metcalfe tallied 11 points in the final ten minutes.
DeSmet, a native of Belleville, Wisconsin, finished with a career-best 22 points on 11 of 18 shooting before fouling out. She also racked up nine rebounds, two blocked shots, two steals, and one assist. Over the last two games, DeSmet has amassed 38 points and 16 boards.
Metcalfe led the WolfPack with 26 points off the bench, making 11 of 16 shots, including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. She also added one free throw, eight rebounds, five steals, four assists, and one blocked shot. In her last three outings, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native is averaging 27.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.6 steals, and 3.0 assists.
Sophomore
Dani Latz recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and ten rebounds. She sank five baskets and was 4 for 4 at the free throw line.
Jamera Green drained a pair of three-pointers as part of a 4 for 14 night to reach ten points, while also posting five assists, four rebounds, three steals, and a blocked shot.
Maia Ellis led the team with 13 rebounds and seven assists, to go along with three points.
Madison College shot 40% (35-86) from the field, 34% (8-23) from long range, and 64% (11-17) at the stripe. The WolfPack controlled the interior, boasting a 50-24 lead in points in the paint, and a 53-35 differential in rebounding that contributed to a 26-12 edge in second chance points. Additionally, they committed ten fewer turnovers and turned the 21 DuPage miscues into a 29-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The Madison College bench also outscored the COD reserves by a 38-11 tally.
