Metcalfe powers WolfPack past Black Hawk

Freshman pours in career-high 35 as Madison College wins fifth straight

MADISON, WISC. - For a moment during Saturday's Madison College women's basketball game against Black Hawk College inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, freshman Serinity Metcalfe was on pace to break the program's single-game scoring record. The nature of the WolfPack's 84-67 win limited her time down the stretch as she finished with a career-best 35 points in leading her team to its fifth consecutive victory. The win pushed Madison's record in Region 4 competition to 10-0 and evened the all-time series to 2-2 with the Braves.

Madison College scored the game's first six points as part of an 8-2 start, only to see Black Hawk College (5-11) answer with back-to-back three-pointers to tie it at 8-8. A 10-0 surge by the WolfPack regained control and led to a 23-14 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was an absolute shootout as the two teams combined for 13 three-pointers. The Braves had the hot hand early with a 14-3 run to assume a two-point advantage at 28-26 just three minutes into the quarter. Metcalfe then took over, draining five triples of her own to key a 25-13 closing stretch that ended with a Jamera Green hit from long range to end the half with a 51-41 edge.

The WolfPack continued to pull away in the third quarter as an and-1 tip-in by sophomore Maia Ellis completed a 21-6 start to the quarter and put the home team up by 25, for their largest lead of the game. Black Hawk narrowed the gap to as little as 14 in the fourth quarter.

Metcalfe, a 5'7" guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, score 17 of her 35 points in the second quarter. She finished 13 for 22 overall and 6 for 10 beyond the arc, while also sinking all three of her free throw attempts. Metcalfe now boasts three games this season with 30 or more points, while also matching her career-high for three-pointers. She added a team-leading five steals, as well as three rebounds and three assists.

Ellis and Green each finished with 12 points. Ellis, a native of Verona, Wisconsin, was 3 for 10 from the floor with one 3-pointer and converted 5 of 7 free throws. The 5'10" guard added nine rebounds, a team-best four assists, and two steals. Green, meanwhile, made two of her five field goals from three-point territory.

Sophomore forward Dani Latz secured a season-high 16 rebounds, while also posting four points. It was her fourth game with double-digit rebounds.

The two teams combined to make 26 three-pointers. Madison College finished 31 for 74 (42%) overall, including a season-high 10 for 26 (38%) from outside the arc, and went 12 of 15 (80%) at the free throw line. The WolfPack also owned a 40-10 edge in points in the paint.
