MADISON, WISC. - Days after suffering their first loss within Region 4, the Madison College men's basketball team got right back to business as usual with an 89-67 defeat of Black Hawk College in a region contest Saturday inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Ten players found their way into the scoring colum, with seven posting eight or more points for the WolfPack, who entered the game ranked #10 in the NJCAA Division II Poll. The win pushes the Pack's all-time lead against the Braves to 3-1.
Black Hawk College (12-6) drained three 3-pointers in the game's first three minutes en route to a 13-4 lead. An 11-0 run by Madison College erased the deficit and put the home team on top 15-13 after a
Braylen Blue triple. Following a BHC bucket, the WolfPack continued to put the ball in the hole with ten consecutive points to assume their first double-digit lead of the day at 25-15. Another braves three cut the differential to 33-31 and Madison owned a 39-35 edge at halftime.
The second half belonged to the WolfPack, as they outscored Black Hawk by a 50-32 margin. An early 8-0 surge featuring back-to-back three-pointers from freshmen
Carter Sullivan and
Cam Williams pushed the lead to 51-37, and then three consecutive three-pointers from
George Whaley IV,
Jackson Bertagnoli, and
Carson McCormick in an 11-0 run a few minutes later gave the home team a 62-41 advantage. The differential grew to as much as 29 when
Isaiah Robinson sank a three-pointer to close a 13-1 stretch with a 75-46 score and eight minutes remaining. The WolfPack maintained a lead of 20 or more the remainder of the game.
Whaley led Madison College with 19 points as he finished 8 of 12 from the field and 2 for 3 beyond the arc, while adding one free throw. The second year guard also racked up six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
McCormick was the only other player to score in double-figures with 12 points thanks to four 3-pointers.
Sullivan and Blue were two of four players to net nine points, with Sullivan also leading the team with 14 boards to match a career-best and Blue also tying a career-high with five assists.
Madison College shot 53% (35-65) on the day and equaled their most three-pointers in a game this season with 14 to shoot 48% (14-29) from distance. They were just 5 of 16 (31%) at the free throw line. The WolfPack dominated the glass by a 47-33 margin.
At halftime, eight members of the
1985-86 MATC Trojans men's basketball team were honored as they celebrated the 40th anniversary of the only team in program history to reach a NJCAA National Tournament.
