Big first quarter results in WolfPack road win at South Suburban

Fourth straight win overall improves Madison College to 9-0 in Region 4

SOUTH HOLLAND, ILL. - The script is becoming a little familiar for the Madison College women's basketball team, who put together another and earned a 70-55 victory over South Suburban College in a Region 4 contest on Tuesday. The WolfPack, who are still receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, turned a 13-point first quarter lead into their ninth consecutive win over a region opponent to remain one of three teams unbeaten in region competition. Sophomore Dani Latz led a quartet of double-digit scorers to help the Pack to their first-ever win over Bulldogs after three prior setbacks.

Madison College capped an 11-3 surge with a Maia Ellis bucket to close the first quarter with a 21-9 advantage. The WolfPack continued to separate early in the second quarter as they used a 12-5 push to reach their largest lead of the game at 33-14. South Suburban College (5-9) stuck with it and eventually closed the gap to 37-26 at the half.

The Bulldogs continued to challenge Madison College as they narrowed the deficit to seven at 42-35 with 6:14 to play in the third; however, the WolfPack ended out the quarter with a 14-9 run to hold a 56-44 lead going into the final ten minutes. In the fourth quarter, Madison College kept the Bulldogs at bay and maintained a double-digit advantage to secure the win.

Latz, who had not reached double-figures in the last four games, rebounded with an 8 for 14 effort overall and a 3 for 3 night at the free throw line to register 19 points. The native of Bloomer, Wisconsin, also reeled in eight rebounds, to go along with one assist, one steal, and one block.

Freshman Jamera Green knocked down a pair of three pointers as part of a 5 for 13 shooting night to score 12 points off the bench. The former Milwaukee Lutheran HS athlete has made multiple three-pointers in five straight games and seven of the last eight outings.

Keelyn Zwirschitz and Serinity Metcalfe each poured in 11 points, with Zwirschitz doing half of her damage at the free throw line by going 6 for 6. Metcalfe added seven rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Maia Ellis was tops on the glass with a dozen boards, to go along with six points, three steals, two assists, and one block. She now boasts seven games with ten or more rebounds in the last 11 outings.

The WolfPack finished 27 of 72 (37%) from the floor, 3 of 19 (15%) from long range, and 13 of 14 (93%) at the charity stripe.
