MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team has begun the new year with back-to-back commanding wins as they followed up a 32-point win Tuesday with an 81-50 defeat of newest in-state and Region 4 foe Blackhawk Technical College on Saturday inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Three players scored in double-figures, led by a double-double effort from sophomore
Maia Ellis as the WolfPack earned their 12th win of the season, surpassing last year's win total and marking the most in a season under third year coach
Angel Whetstone. The win came in the first-ever meeting with the Talons.
Madison College used five straight points from Ellis to break an early 4-4 tie, and then back-to-back three-pointers from first year guards
Serinity Metcalfe and
Jamera Green pushed the lead to 15-8. However, Blackhawk Technical College (2-12) closed the first quarter with a 6-0 run to close to within 15-14. The WolfPack busted the game open in the second quarter with a 12-0 run bookended by two more three's from Green. Madison College led 34-21 at the half.
The momentum carried into the third quarter, which the home team dominated by a 29-7 differential. The WolfPack defense held the Talons without a field goal for nearly eight minutes as part of a 23-2 surge that included 17 consecutive points. Seven different players scored in the quarter, led by Ellis with eight points. Madison College pushed the advantage to as high as 38 points with a 66-28 lead early in the fourth before the Talons outscored the Pack 22-18 in the final ten minutes.
Green, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, poured in a career-high 18 points off the bench, thanks to a career-best four made three-pointers. She finished 7 for 15 overall, and added two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Metcalfe matched Green with 18 points of her own, converting 8 of 21 shots overall with one 3-pointer and one free throw. The former Shorewood HS athlete also contributed seven rebounds, and a team-high five assists and three steals.
Ellis secured her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while also coming through with two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. The Verona, Wisconsin, native, boasts six games with ten or more rebounds, and five games with ten or more points.
Sophomore
Keelyn Zwirschitz tied Ellis for the team lead in rebounds with a career-high 11 boards, to go along with nine points, three assists, two steals, and a block.
Madison shot 39% (30-76) overall, 26% (7-27) from three-point range, and 73% (14-19) at the free throw line. They also reeled in a 49-37 lead in total rebounds and forced 21 turnovers by the Talons. The WolfPack finished with a 44-28 edge in points in the paint and an 18-10 lead in second chance scoring.
The teams are scheduled to play against on February 14 in Janesville, Wisconsin.
