MADISON, WISC. - Saturday's Region 4 women's soccer match at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East finished with Madison College on top 1-0 over Waubonsee Community College despite the home team generating a significantly higher amount of offensive opportunities. Sophomore
Suzy Hinds Cruz tallied the game-winner, while second year goalkeeper
Kaelyn Welch earned her fifth shutout win of the season. The WolfPack, who have won three straight to open their current five-match homestand, are now 4-0 all-time against the Chiefs.
Madison College racked up an 18-3 advantage in total shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal against Waubonsee Community College (3-4-2). The Chiefs goalkeeper, however, was up to the challenge and came away with seven saves, but it was the one save she didn't make that proved to be the difference.
Late the in first half of a 0-0 match, sophomore forward
Ava Schmidt tracked down a free ball on the defensive side of the center circle. She made one quick pass to second year midfielder
Suzy Hinds Cruz, who blasted past a pair of WCC defenders. With the goalkeeper charging to meet Hinds Cruz at the penalty kick dot, the sophomore delivered a low scoring strike for her seventh goal of the season and the 20th of her career. The goal moves the Madison, Wisconsin, native into fourth on the program's all-time scoring list. The assist for Schmidt is the second of her career and first this season.
