MADISON, WISC. - Freshman
Johan Lopez scored two goals Saturday as the Madison College men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-1 decision over visiting Parkland College at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Lopez' first career multi-goal match is the seventh such performance this year for the WolfPack, who are ranked #14 in the latest NJCAA Division II Men's Soccer poll. The victory came in the first meeting all-time with the Cobras.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net for the first 30-plus minutes of the match. Freshman defender
Dan Fox changed that with his first collegiate goal in the 35'. Fox, a Canberra, Australia, native, played the ball in on a corner kick to sophomore
Rodrigo Lasso, who immediately sent it back to Fox just outside the penalty area. Fox sent a right-footed ball towards the far post, and it ricocheted off the crossbar and down into the goal for a 1-0 lead.Â
Six minutes later, Lopez added to the lead with a remarkable goal. The forward from Baraboo, Wisconsin, took a throw-in from freshman
Guilherme Amaral and popped it over one defender on his way to the goalie box, where her drove the ball down into the ground and under a leaping goalkeeper for the score.
Parkland College (6-6-0) kept the match close with a goal in the 56' off a free kick that, like Fox' goal, ricocheted down off the crossbar and in from about 30 yards out.
The one-goal differential remained until the 85' and another scoring strike by Lopez. Following a short pass from
Cole Rogers prior to midfield, Lopez took a look up the pitch and turned on the jets as he dribbled past four defenders straight up the middle. As the goalkeeper came out to meet him near the PK dot, Lopez kicked a low ball past the 'keeper for a 3-1 lead and his second goal of the match.
Madison College finished with a 14-7 lead in total shots and a narrow 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.Â
Freshman
Carson Stebbins was tops with five shots, followed by four from Lopez, who produced a team-high three shots on goal. Lopez now boasts five goals on the season.Â
Goalkeeper
Caylen Coventry made four saves and allowed one goal to keep his goals against average under 0.90.Â
