Penalty kick decides battle atop Region 4 as #14 WolfPack stay unbeaten

Rogers scores twice as Madison College hands Triton College its first loss

MADISON, WISC. - Wednesday night's Region 4 showdown between two teams without a loss came down to a second half penalty kick, which sophomore Cole Rogers converted to send #14-ranked Madison College to a 3-2 win over Triton College for the team's eight straight win. Rogers was able to find the back of the net twice, including the game's first goal as two teams combined for four goals in the first 33 minutes. Despite the win, the WolfPack still trails the all-time series by a 24-8-1 margin against the Trojans, who are receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll.

Madison College took advantage of early corner kicks to produce their first two goals of the game. Sophomore Jacob Unger sent in a 9' corner that Rogers, a 6'3" midfielder, headed in for a 1-0 lead.

Triton College (5-1-3) evened the score at 1-1 in the 14' with an assisted goal against WolfPack goalkeeper Caylen Coventry. Just a few seconds later, Madison College was against setting up for a corner kick, which Unger lofted towards the front of the net. This time it was second year defender JJ Espinosa that flew in for the header and a 2-1 advantage. The former Beaver Dam HS athlete would come up with a crucial tackle late in the match to prevent a potential shot on goal.

The Trojans delivered yet another equalizer in the 33' to make it 2-2 at halftime.

The intensity of the play grew with each passing minute in the second half, and as the clock rolled into the 58', Madison College played the ball to Rogers as he charged hard into the penalty area. Triton's goalkeeper came out to make a tackle and was whistled for a foul, resulting in a penalty. Rogers, a native of Auckland, New Zealand, slid a low kick past the 'keeper for what proved to be the game-winner and a 3-2 lead.

The match saw both teams finish with seven shots on goal, while the home team held a narrow 12-10 edge in total shots. The WolfPack scored on two of their three corner kicks. Rogers is now tied for the team lead with six goals, while Espinosa boasts two goals on the year. Unger's pair of assists are his first of the season for the Sussex, Wisconsin, product.

Coventry, a first year goalkeeper from Spain, was credited with a career-high five saves.
