MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's soccer responded to their first loss of the season with a 3-0 victory over Region 4 foe Harry S. Truman College on Saturday night at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East to open a five-match homestand. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kaelyn Welch posted her fourth shutout of the season, while second year forward
Reese Brekke recorded her first career multi-goal match.
Brekke and the WolfPack wasted no time putting the first goal of the game on the scoreboard. The transfer from Pellissippi State Community College took as perfect pass from fellow sophomore
Suzy Hinds Cruz as she got behind the Truman College (2-3) defense. Brekke then put a shot on goal that was deflected by the goalkeeper before bouncing into the net for the 1-0 late in the opening minute.
It remained 1-0 into the second half until another sophomore forward added some breathing room with her second goal of the season.
Ava Schmidt was one of two players charging down the middle of the pitch when freshman
Alyssa Moore lofted a pass towards the top of the penalty area from the left boundary. The ball bounced passed Brekke and found Schmidt, who angled a kick back towards the left post to make it a 2-0 lead in the 51'.
In the 76', the Falcons failed to advance the ball off a goalie kick and Brekke intercepted a pass being send back towards the 'keeper. She took one dribble towards the baseline and into the penalty area on the right side, where she booted a kick above the goalkeepers head. Again the ball was deflected by the GK and landed in the net for a 3-0 lead and a two-goal performance by the Stoughton, Wisconsin, native. She now touts five goals on the season and is tied for second on the team.
Welch faced just one shot on goal in the match, making her lone save in the 18' en route to her ninth career clean sheet to move into third place in program history.
The WolfPack held a 5-3 edge in total shots and a 4-1 lead in shots on goal, while also posting a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Brekke led the way with three shots and two on goal.
Saturday's match was the first ever played between Madison College and Truman College.
