MADISON, WISC. - Two second half goals was enough to send the Madison College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Carl Sandburg College in their Region 4 and home opener on Saturday at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Goalkeeper
Caylen Coventry recorded his first career clean sheet in the shutout win, while
Jacob Unger and Johan Lopen provided the scoring with their first goals of the season. The win came in the first meeting all-time between the WolfPack and the Chargers.
Neither team was able to mount much offense in the match's first 45 minutes, which ended with a 0-0 tie. Madison controlled the ball for most of the half, generating four shots and putting one on goal. Carl Sandburg College (1-1-0) was held without a shot and earned one corner kick.
The game turned in the second half when a throw-in on the Chargers end was quickly turned into a 65' goal by the home team. Madison gained control of the ball off the throw in and
Hudson Nielsen moved it ahead to midfield, where he passed it ahead to
Rodrigo Lasso. The sophomore worked the ball to the right side of the penalty box and then centered a pass towards the left post, where Unger was waiting. The ball split between the Sandburg goalie and a defender, allowing Unger a free look at the net for an easy conversion. Lasso was awarded the assist.
Still leading by a goal as the clock moved closer to final time, the Chargers lost a pair of players to red cards in the final six minutes and the Pack took advantage. Freshman defender
Will Skinner cleared the ball with a long kick down field, leaving freshman
Johan Lopez in a one-on-one battle for possession. Lopez, a freshman forward from Baraboo, Wisconsin, maneuvered around the defender and delivered a scoring strike past the goalie for a little breathing room in the 89'. The assist by Skinner marks his first career point.
Coventry, a native of Barcelona, Spain, recorded one save on the only shot on goal he faced all game, thanks to the WolfPack defense.
Unger's first goal of the season gives the Sussex, Wisconsin, native, three career goals, while Lopez' goal is the first of his collegiate career. Lopez, who had an assist in the season opener, is now tied for the team lead with three total points.
Madison College finished with an 11-1 edge in total shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. The home team also racked up a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. The match saw eight yellow cards and two red cards.
The WolfPack is now 1-0-0 in region play, and has won its first two matches of the season for the first time since 2022.
