Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

#25 WolfPack dominates home tournament with four sweeps

Dominant weekend included upset of #13 Illinois Central

MADISON, WISC. - Earlier in the week, the Madison College women's volleyball team joined the NJCAA Division II Poll as the #25-ranked team in the nation. They bolstered their claim to be listed among the nation's top teams with a perfect 4-0 weekend at their own Madison College Tournament on Friday and Saturday inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack opened with a 3-0 defeat of Lincoln Land Community College and a 3-0 sweep of Spoon River College on the first day. The second day of action featured a top-25 showdown with #13-ranked Illinois Central, with the Pack took in three sets before finishing off their undefeated weekend with a 3-0 victory against Region 4 foe Waubonsee Community College.

Match #1 (Friday): #25 Madison College 3, Lincoln Land Community College 0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-20)

Madison College set the tone for the weekend right out of the gates with a 9-2 surge to open the first set against the Loggers, and did much the same in the second set with an early 14-4 lead and finished with a .385 attack percentage in that set. The third set saw yet another quick start up 8-2, before Lincoln Land (6-8) rallied to keep it close. The home team hammered home 15 kills in the set to close out the sweep, part of a 39-kill effort for the match with a .227 efficiency. They also racked up 17 aces, their second-highest total in a match this fall, as well as three blocks, 38 assists, and 45 digs.

Freshman Ella Vosberg paced the offense with 11 kills and a .476 percentage on 21 attempts. Fellow freshman Sam Schultz was right behind with nine kills, followed by Makayla Dallas with seven.

Setter Allie Andrews directed the action with 34 assists. Libero Avery Agnew had nine digs, snapping an impressive streak of 11 consecutive matches with double-digit digs. Dallas was second with eight digs, while Andrews and Cora Webster added seven each.

The WolfPack's service game saw Schultz and Agnew each register four aces, setting a new career-best for the former and matching a career-high for the latter. Dallas and Hazel Allen served up three aces each, with two more coming from Webster.

Madison is 2-5 all-time against the Loggers, and the two teams are schedule to play again on October 4 at the Parkland College Tournament in Champaign, Illinois.

Match #2 (Friday): #25 Madison College 3, Spoon River College 0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-19)

The day's second match once again featured fast starts for Madison College in the opening two sets. A 7-0 burst in the first set put the Pack up 12-3 en route to a 15-point win before a 9-3 lead early in the second created enough separation for an easy set win. The third set played more competitively as the Snappers (6-11) held a 19-18 lead. The WolfPack responded with six straight points, a stretch that opened with kills from Caylee Coggins and Ella Vosberg, followed by three consecutive aces from Sam Schultz

Madison College had 14 or more kills in each set and hit at a .286 clip for the match, highlighted by the first set with 16 kills and a .500 efficiency. Overall, they amassed 46 kills, ten aces, one block, and 57 digs.

Vosberg and Schultz tied for the team lead with 13 kills a piece and both players hit better than .400 in the match. Coggins tallied eight kills and led the team with a .545 attack percentage.

Allie Andrews dished out 44 assists, her highest output in a three-set match this season. Avery Agnew tracked down 18 digs, followed by nine from Cora Webster, eight from Webster, and seven each by Makayla Dallas and Schultz.

Dallas and Schultz were credited with three aces, while Webster and Andrews both had two.

The WolfPack is now 2-0 opposite Spoon River College, with the two teams again slated to meet later this season on October 4 at the Parkland College Tournament.

Match #3 (Saturday): #25 Madison College 3, #13 Illinois Central College 0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-19)

One of the marquee matchups of the weekend was a showdown with Illinois Central College, who earlier in the morning defeated #23-ranked Milwaukee Area Technical College in a four-set match between two ranked teams. Yet again, the WolfPack was off-and-running as they took a 10-3 lead in the opening set, and closed it out with a 9-3 run for an impressive 14-point win. A 7-2 stretch by the WolfPack broke a 7-all tie in the second set, which the home team won by five. The Cougars (10-5) used a fast start to take a 9-4 lead in the third set; however, Madison College responded and went ahead 15-12, a lead they never relinquished.

For the match, the WolfPack tallied 40 kills - 15 of which came in the third set - on 39 assists, eight aces, three blocks, and 52 digs. They hit .333 or better in two of the three sets and finished with an attack percentage of .273.

Makayla Dallas registered her fifth game with double-digit kills, finishing with 14 and a .480 efficiency, to go along with two aces and six digs. Ella Vosberg added ten kills.

Allie Andrews came through with 38 assists, three kills, one ace, and seven digs. Sam Schultz led all servers with three aces, followed by two each for Dallas and Kate Howe

Defensively, libero Avery Agnew had 15 digs, followed by a dozen from Schultz.

The WolfPack now leads the all-time series with the Cougars by a 2-1 tally.

Match #4 (Saturday): #25 Madison College 3, Waubonsee Community College 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-9)

The finale of the weekend brought another three set sweep, with the WolfPack building a five-point lead in each set before cruising to victory. Madison College hit better than .225 in all three sets, led by a .571 efficiency in the clinching third set. The home team finished with 34 kills and a .342 attack percentage, 34 assists, 14 aces, five blocks, and 34 digs. The Pack has generated double-digit aces in 11 of their 15 matches so far this season.

Ella Vosberg's ten kills and .500 efficiency was tops for Madison, giving the outside hitter ten or more kills in five straight matches, as well as in 12 matches this fall. Sam Schultz was second with nine kills.

Setter Allie Andrews had 27 assists and led the team defensively with two blocks and seven digs. Additionally, she was one of six players with multiple aces, a group led by sophomores Cora Webster and Sammy Johnson with three each.

Despite the win, the Chiefs (8-8) still own a 12-7 advantage in head-to-head matches.
