Unbeaten streak continues as WolfPack shuts out Lake County

Madison College, Kaelyn Welch extend scoreless minutes streak to 271

GRAYSLAKE, ILL. - The season-opening unbeaten streak continued Saturday for the Madison College women's soccer team as they earned a 3-0 win in Region 4 competition over the College of Lake County. The victory marks the WolfPack's fourth in a row, as well as extends their streak of matches without a loss to five to start the season. Goalkeeper Kaelyn Welch recorded a clean sheet for the third match in a row and has held opponents without a goal for 271 consecutive minutes. Madison leads the all-time series with the Lancers by a 4-0-1 margin.

The match was scoreless for the first 30 minutes until Madison College broke through not once, but twice in the 31' to take a commanding 2-0 lead. After Finley LaFlash had the ball kicked away shy of midfield, freshman Madelyn Marquette delivered a long pass downfield that put sophomore transfer Reese Brekke in a footrace with several Lancers. Brekke was the first to the ball, and after an initial control with her left foot, delivered a low scoring strike past a sliding goalkeeper to finish off the breakaway goal for the 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, the WolfPack again demonstrated their transition game as sophomore Suzy Hinds Cruz took a pass from Welch and played it ahead to Brekke past the center stripe. The Stoughton, Wisconsin, native, made a touch pass out in front of LaFlash, who was sprinting up the right side of the pitch. LaFlash, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, lobbed a shot on goal from the far right corner of the penalty area and it sailed over the keeper and under the crossbar to give the WolfPack a 2-0 lead.

Still up two goals in th second half, Madison College added some insurance with a 63' goal by Zoey Lovejoy. A corner kick by Hinds Cruz was initially headed out by a College of Lake County (2-3) player; however, the redirect went right to Lovejoy and she dumped it over 'keeper and into the net.

Welch, a former Monroe HS athlete, was credited with one save in the first half en route to her third shut out. The goal by Brekke is her third in the last four matches, while she also sits tied for the team lead in assists with three. LaFlash has scored two goals on the year, and the scoring strike by Lovejoy is the first of her career.

Madison College generated an 11-1 lead in total shots, which included an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.
