MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's soccer team is without a loss through the season's first four matches for the first time since the 2018 season. After Wednesday's 2-0 victory against Kankakee Community College, the WolfPack has yet to surrender a goal in two Region 4 matches as goalkeeper
Kaelyn Welch recorded her second straight clean sheet, while fellow sophomores
Suzy Hinds Cruz and
Reese Brekke provided the goals. The Pack now boasts a 3-0-1 record all-time against the Cavaliers, with all four matches coming since 2022.
It took just eight minutes for the home team to get on the scoreboard. Madison College was dominating possession when freshman
Emlyn Knutson played the ball high into the air deep in the WolfPack offense zone. The ball was sent back out to Knutson, who then bounced a pass back to Hinds Cruz. The Madison, Wisconsin, native, collected the ball in front of her and unloaded a laser to the top of the net, just clearing the leaping hands of the Kankakee Community College (1-5) goalkeeper and flying under the crossbar.
Still 1-0 in the second half, Madison College used a header to control a Cavaliers goalie kick. The possession resulted in a throw in to Hinds Cruz, who quickly passed it off to Brekke. The forward sent a pass towards the goal and teammate
Hayleigh Motelet; however, it deflected off a nearby defender and into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 59'.
Welch, a second year keeper from Monroe, Wisconsin, owns a streak of 181 consecutive scoreless minutes after her second straight shutout win. She recorded one save and saw another tremendous defensive effort in front of her.
Hinds Cruz has scored a goal in all four matches so far this season, with the latest moving her total to five overall. Brekke, a native of Stoughton, Wisconsin, boasts two goals on the year. The duo was part of a three-way tie with
Ava Schmidt for the team lead in shots on goal with two each, while freshman
Chloe Voung was tops with four total shots.
Knutson, a former Sun Prairie East HS athlete, was credited with an assist on the first goal and leads the team with three assists and 15 points.
The WolfPack registered a 15-2 lead in total shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. They also held a 7-2 differential in corner kicks.
