MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's volleyball team improved their season-opening win streak to six matches Tuesday night with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22) win over the College of DuPage in the Region 4 and home opener at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Three freshmen keyed the offense with career-highs in kills as the WolfPack improved their consecutive sets win streak to 17 straight before a loss in the third set ended it. The match win improves the Pack's all-time lead in the head-to-head series to 33-13 against the Chaparrals, who entered the match ranked #2 in the
NJCAA Division III Preseason Poll.
After taking a 3-0 lead to start the opening set, the WolfPack found themselves down 5-4 before eventually regaining a 12-9 advantage. An 8-4 run down the stretch brought set point for Madison College, who weathered four consecutive Chaparrals points before closing out the set. The Pack posted 15 kills and a .243 attack percentage to take the one-set-to-none lead.
Tied at 9-9 in the second set, Madison went on to win 16 of the next 23 points, a sequence that included a trio of three-point runs. The set proved to be the WolfPack's most efficient with a .406 percentage on 16 kills.
Following a third set in which the home team amassed nine kills, hit .053, and saw an early 11-5 edge evaporate with six consecutive points lost as part of a bigger 12-2 surge to take control of the set. The loss ended a streak of 17 consecutive sets won to open the year.
The WolfPack; however, was able to take care of business in the fourth set to secure their sixth straight match victory. The set was back-and-forth through the first 24 points until a 6-0 run broke a 12-12 tie. College of DuPage (3-2) did not fold and rallied with an 8-2 burst that closed the gap to two points. Back-to-back kills by
Ella Vosberg and
Allie Andrews regained momentum for Madison College. The closing stretch continued with another Vosberg kill and a successful attack from
Sam Schultz. First year defensive specialist and libero
Hazel Allen served up an ace on match point for the win.
Madison College finished with 62 kills - 30 more than the Chaps - and hit at a .271 clip. The kills, along with 54 assists, and 68 digs, all set new team-highs for a match this season.
Andrews, a Darlington, Wisconsin, native, recorded her first career triple-double with 12 kills, 34 assists, and 12 digs. The 5'9" freshman set new career marks in all three categories.
She was part of a trio of players to register double-digit kills, led by Vosberg's 16 kills. Schultz added a dozen kills and 13 digs for her first career double-double.
Caylee Coggins and
Makayla Dallas racked up eight kills each, with Coggins posting a team-high .333 efficiency, and
