Two first half goals propel WolfPack to season-opening win at Hawkeye

Diaz, Lasso find the net, Coventry earns first win

WATERLOO, IOWA - Offense was hard to come by Saturday as Madison College and Hawkeye Community College opened the new 2025 men's soccer season. The WolfPack took a two-goal lead with first half goals from Gio Diaz and Rodrigo Lasso, and then held off the RedTails for a 2-1 victory in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

In the 11', freshman Johan Lopez outplayed Hawkeye for a loose ball and was able to send a long pass ahead to fellow first year Gio Diaz. The forward from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, collected the pass and proceeded to put on an impressive display of dribbling and moves as he nutmegged the first defender, juked a second with a move to his left, and then beat the goalkeeper with a left-footed strike back to the right post. The scoring strike is the first career goal for Diaz.

Still leading by a goal, the Pack added what proved to be the game-winner in the 39'. Sophomore forward Hudson Nielsen worked his way through the Hawkeye defense as he attacked from the left, and then dropped a little pass in front of a charging Lasso. The second year midfielder from Panama City, Panama, maintained control of the ball through traffic and was able to deliver a low shot past the 'keeper for a 2-0 lead. It was the second goal of Lasso's collegiate career.

The two-goal edge was cut in half right before the end of the first period when Hawkeye Community College converted a penalty kick to make it a 2-1 differential. That lead held up the rest of the 45 minutes as the WolfPack limited the RedTails to just two total shots in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Caylen Coventry, a native of Barcelona, Spain, recorded his first collegiate win with two saves and one goal allowed.

Nielsen led the team with three total shots, followed by two each from Lasso and Lopez.
