Madison College's Kalinowski earns 400th softball coaching victory

WolfPack softball runs win streak to eight with sweep of DuPage

MADISON, WISC. - Madison College softball coach Leo Kalinowski reached a milestone Friday earning his 400th - and 401st - career coaching victories as his WolfPack swept a Region 4 doubleheader against the College of DuPage at Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack won by scores of 6-3 and 13-2, with the last game ending in five innings after the home team posted double-digit runs and hits for the sixth time in the 2025 season. The two victories narrow the all-time series to a one-game differential as the Chaparrals are ahead 26-25 despite 21 wins in the last 25 meetings by Madison College.

Game #1: Madison College 6, College of DuPage 3

The day's opening game saw Madison College jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After Ava Stahl reached on a single and stole second, Rylee Rogers single to left to put runners at the corners for freshman Raegen Schwarz. She delivered with a double to the wall in left to score both runners. Two batters later, sophomore Brooke Anderson came through with a two-out single to plate Schwarz.

The Chaparrals got a run back in the second on a hit, an error, and a ground out against starter Kendall Weik. The differential became 3-2 in the fourth when Weik hit the leadoff batter, who then stole second and scored on a grounder back up the middle. Visiting COD evened the game at 3-3 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.

The WolfPack answered the call in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on two walks and two hits. Rogers opened the frame with a walk and Schwarz followed with a line drive single to right. A walk to Weik loaded the bases with one out for Anderson, and the Plain, Wisconsin, native, again came through with a two-run double to left. Rogers and Schwarz touched home, and pinch runner Hanna Stremkowski joined them after Tristen Young grounded out to the first baseman to drive her in.

Weik (7-1) secured her fourth straight pitching win with seven innings and seven strikeouts. The former Phillips HS athlete allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits, two walks, and one hit batter.

Anderson was tops at the plate with a 3 for 4 effort that yielded three runs batted in. Schwarz, a native of Appleton, Wisconsin, was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two more batted in. Stahl also produced a pair of hits and a run, while Rogers had a hit and a walk en route to scoring twice.

Kalinowski, already a Madison College Hall of Famer following a his run of three national titles and 414 career wins with the baseball program from 1992-2003, took over the softball program in 2011 and has built it into a three-time Region 4 champion.

Game #2: Madison College 13, College of DuPage 2 (5 innings)

In the finale, the College of DuPage (10-4) plated two quick runs against WolfPack starter Brooke Steinhorst with three singles to make it 2-0. The lead lasted for mere minutes as the Madison College (14-3) bats got right to work in their half of the first inning, resulting in their highest-scoring inning of the season. Ava Stahl opened the game with a line drive single to right and then scored on a line drive single to left by Rylee Rogers. After Raegen Schwarz reached on a base hit to center, Brooke Steinhorst and Brooke Anderson each followed with run-scoring singles to make it 3-2. Cora Nelson's sacrifice fly brought in Steinhorst ahead of a two-run single to left from Shelby Brooks that chased in Anderson and Kendall Weik. Stahl's second plate appearance resulted in her team-leading fifth triple and made it 7-2 as Brooks touched home. Rogers, Schwarz, and Steinhorst added three more run-producing hits as the lead became 10-4 following an 11-hit frame.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fourth when Madison College tallied their final three runs on a walk and three hits. Rogers double to deep center to score Jeneya Marquez Perez before Schwarz lined a two-run single up the middle good enough to bring in Stahl and Rogers.

The first four batters in the WolfPack lineup each finished with three hits, with the fifth player in the order added two more for an impressive 14 for 19 effort collectively. Roger, a native of Belmont, Wisconsin, set a career high with three runs batted in, while also scoring three runs as part of her 3 for 4 effort. Schwarz used her three hits to also drive in three runs and score two more. Stahl, a former Wautoma HS athlete, matched Rogers with a team-high three runs scored, and also drove in a run on her three base knocks.

Steinhorst finished with three hits, two RBI, and one run scored, while Anderson had two hits, a run, and a run batted in. The other three hitters in the lineup each had one hit, with Shelby Brooks driving in a pair and scoring once.

In the circle, Steinhorst (6-2) limited the Chaparrals to their two runs on six hits over five innings. The product of Poynette, Wisconsin, struck out four en route to her fourth consecutive victory.
