MOLINE, ILL. - A season-high 16-game win streak came to an end Sunday as Madison College baseball was swept in a Region 4 doubleheader between two ranked teams. Black Hawk College, ranked #16 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, defeated the #4 WolfPack by scores of 3-2 and 2-0 to mark just the third and fourth losses this season against region opponents. The Braves have now won four of the last five meetings, while the Pack still owns a 27-17 lead in the all-time series.
Game #1: #16 Black Hawk College 3, #4 Madison College 2
Madison College was the first to put runs on the scoreboard and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out following a dropped third strike and two singles, sophomore
Jalen Gellings grounded into a fielder's choice to score
Ryan Santi for the game's first run. A wild pitch during the next at bat allowed
Chris Calico to score for the two-run lead.Â
WolfPack pitchers
Quinn Falish and
Sam Steuber had allowed just two hits through five innings in helping maintain the two-run differential. Black Hawk College opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and a double to put runners in scoring position. A ground out to
Howie Rickett at second allowed one run to score, and after a hit by pitch put runners at the corners, the Braves hit another ground ball to Rickett to score the game-tying run. Rickett committed a throwing error on the initial play and when a second error was made by the WolfPack, the runner from first sprinted all the way around to score the go-ahead run.
Santi, a sophomore from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, produced two of the team's six hit and scored a run. Calico, a West Salem, Wisconsin, native, was 1 for 1 with two walks and a run scored. Gellings delivered one hit and a RBI.
Falish worked the first four innings and kept BHC off the scoreboard despite three hits and a walk. The native of De Pere, Wisconsin, struck out one batter before giving way to Steuber (3-1) for the final two frames. Steuber was tagged for two earned runs on two hits and a walk.
Game #1: #16 Black Hawk College 3, #4 Madison College 2
Offense was even harder to come by in the second game, as the teams combined for just two runs and 12 hits. Both runs were scored in the bottom of the second by Black Hawk College (42-10). A leadoff double and a walk put two runner aboard, and both advanced into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. A sac fly scored the first run, and a triple plated the second.Â
Madison College (32-9) nearly put a run on the board in the fifth.
Charlie Schau led off with a single, and was at second base with two outs when
Beau Bloxdorf lined a single to right. Unfortunately, the right fielder threw out Schau as he attempted to score. The WolfPack also stranded a pair of runners in the sixth inning.
Schau posted two of the team's five hits, with the other three coming from
Jalen Gellings, Bloxdorf, and
Howie Rickett.
Freshman pitcher
Noah Marschke (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season despite six strong innings and five strikeouts. He surrendered two runs on seven hits and three walks.
