MADISON, WISC. - Saturday's Region 4 Triangular at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field proved to be a masterclass in dominance as Madison College earned a pair of run-ruled victories, and recorded their first no-hitter in two years. Sophomore
Kendall Weik allowed just one base runner and did not give up a hit in the opener as the WolfPack rolled to a 16-0 win over McHenry County College, and after Carl Sandburg College defeated the Scots in the day's second game, Madison College posted an 11-0 decision over the Chargers in the finale. The wins also give the Pack its 11th consecutive 20-win season.
Game #1: Madison College 16, McHenry County College 0 (5 innings)
Kendall Weik joined an exclusive group on Saturday, becoming just the fourth pitcher in program history to toss a no-hitter as she steamrolled the Scots over five innings. The sophomore righthander's no-no is the first since a combined effort on April 18, 2023, and the first completed by a single pitcher since Casey Fountain did the same over five innings on April 22, 2021. Much like Fountain, Weik came within one batter of throwing a perfect game as she walked the second batter of the third inning. The win for Weik ends a five-game losing streak in the circle and improves her record this season to 8-6. The Fifield, Wisconsin, native struck out eight batters, pushing her over the century mark for K's this season. She now boasts 220 career strikeouts, placing her second all-time behind Fountain's school-record 245.
The WolfPack offense got runs on the scoreboard right away in the first inning when freshman
Raegen Schwarz continued her hot-hitting with a run-scoring triple to right to plate
Rylee Rogers.
Brooke Steinhorst followed with a single through the left side to score Schwarz for a 2-0 edge.
Sophomore
Maya Dzick, a Hales Corners, Wisconsin, native, opened the second inning in style, belting her first career home run over the left field fence. Four batters later, Steinhorst cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to center to make it 6-0. Freshman
Bailey Mester, a native of Belmont, Wisconsin, produced her first caeer runs batted in with a two-run single, followed two batters later by another bases-clearing double from
Amie Richmond to make it 11-0. The season-high 11-run inning was not over yet as Rogers drove in Richmond with a single, and then scored when Schwarz doubled to the wall in left.
Three more runs in the third made it 16-0, with Mester picking up another RBI and fellow first year
Shelby Brooks scored two runs batted in when her double to left allowed Mester and
Hanna Stremkowski to touch home.
In all, the WolfPack amassed 16 runs on 15 hits and six walks. Schwarz, a former Appleton West HS athlete, produced her second consecutive 3 for 3 game, driving in two runs and scoring two more. Steinhorst used her two hits to rack up four RBI and a run scored, while Mester set career-high's with two hits and three runs batted in, to go along with one run scored. Rogers led all players with three runs scored as part of a 1 for 1 day with three walks and a run driven in.
Madison College has won ten straight over McHenry County College (6-11), and now sits at 14-7 in the all-time series.
Game #1: Madison College 16, McHenry County College 0 (5 innings)
The day's second game nearly mirrored the first as pitcher Brook Steinhorst took a no-hit bid into the third inning as the WolfPack piled up a sizable early lead. Madison College took a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to five hits, a walk, and an error.
Raegen Schwarz doubled to left to drive
Rylee Rogers, marking the seventh consecutive plate appearance with a base hit for Schwarz. Steinhorst and
Brooke Anderson each followed with run-producing hits for a 3-0 lead. An error by the first baseman later in the frame made it a four-run lead, and freshman
Jeneya Marquez Perez boosted it to 5-0 with a single to left that plated Weik.Â
The differential swelled to 9-0 in the second as the Pack rattled off five more hits. Anderson's single to left was the third straight and brought Schwarz in to score, and then Steinhorst came in to score on a
Tailer Bartelt ground out. Freshman
Hayden Schabel completed the scoring with a two-run single up the middle with Anderson and Weik in scoring position.
The final runs were recorded in the third when Anderson drove in
Kaley Koltz with a single, and Bartelt's liner to left brought home Steinhorst, who continued to keep the Chargers at bay from the pitcher's circle.
Steinhorst, a native of Poynette, Wisconsin, scattered four hits and struck out three batters in her five innings of work. She also finished 2 for 4 with a career-best three runs scored and one driven in.Â
Anderson, a Plain, Wisconsin, product, was a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Schwarz finished with two hits, two runs, and a RBI, while Marquez Perez posted two hits and a run batted in. Bartelt and Schabel both tallied a hit and a two RBI.
The win gives the WolfPack a 16-4 lead in the head-to-head series with Carl Sandburg College (13-33).Â
